Loango Lodge

Gabon's only true safari lodge, Loango Lodge is the ideal base from which to explore the national park. It has endured its ups and downs over the years, but it is still superbly located, offering comfortable and modern facilities.

The 11 bungalows all have air conditioning and hot water, whilst the beautifully positioned restaurant looks out over the river. The food at the lodge is superb by Gabonese standards, thanks largely to French manager Mathieu, who is a restauranteur by trade.

Access to the park is via pontoon boat, which will take you across the lagoon and into the park. On the other side, you transfer into waiting 4x4 safari vehicles for game drives. A number of the guides now speak English, but the closed cabs of the vehicles and a lack of confidence mean explanations are limited. However, the guides' willingness to get out on foot within sight of forest elephants - especially when prompted - go some way to making up for this.

Why We Like Loango Lodge

This is, arguably, the only option if you want to see Loango National Park. Whilst there are a couple of nearby hotels of questionable quality, the lodge's superb location - within sight of the park boundary, the beautiful setup and the excellent food mean that there is really no reason to consider any alternatives.
