Tailor-Made Holiday

Family Adventure in Ecuador

9 days

from £1,945pp (excluding flights)

This nine day Ecuador holiday fits into a half term break and covers two locations that are packed with fun things to do. The colonial city of Quito in the Andes and the Amazon Rainforest.

  • Visit the Equatorial Monument and put a foot in each hemisphere
  • Have a day of adventure, white water rafting
  • Explore the Amazon Rainforest and wake to the sounds of howler monkeys each morning
  • Extend this holiday to horse ride in the Andes or visit the Galapagos Islands

Quito offers a base to relax after the long flight and a place to get a feel for South America. Hotels offer everything a family would need including swimming pools, interconnecting rooms and multiple onsite restaurants. Ecuador as the name suggests, sits on the equator and just outside Quito is the Middle of the World Monument where you can stand in both hemispheres. For a day of adventure, travel down through the cloud forest to the foothills of the Andes where you will jump aboard your inflatable raft for a day of white water exploration.

Head off deep into the Amazon Rainforest to be explorers for a few days. Base yourself in a lodge and with your guide discover the wonders this famous jungle has to offer. Adventure on foot, dugout canoe or high up in the canopy looking out for the sleepy sloth, lively monkeys or colourful toucan.

Day 1

Fly London to Madrid

Fly Madrid to Quito

With Pichincha Volcano one side, Machangara Gorge on the other and the equator passing directly through, few can rival Quito's setting. Few also can match the splendour of its old town, with its colonial churches, mansions and plazas.

Quito was named as the first World Cultural Heritage Site in the world by UNESCO in 1978. This historical city sits at 2,850 metres and has the largest and best preserved historic centre and colonial quarters in Latin America.

Day 2

Half Day City Tour and Equatorial Monument
Half day morning city tour of the highlights of Quito including visiting the old town, Independence Square with its cathedral, the ornate La Compania Jesuit church and the Panecillo hill with its spectacular views over Quito. Also visit the Mitad del Mundo, built to mark the meridian arch of the planet at 0º latitude, better known as the Equator, and to commemorate this surveying feat in the 18th century. It’s also the site of a small colonial town crowded with craft shops and restaurants and an Ethnographic Museum, which traces the history and archaeology of Ecuador’s native people back to the Pleistocene.

Day 3

Full Day White-Water Rafting
The white-water adventure begins with an early start from Quito, travelling to Santo Domingo. Take a scenic drive towards the coast, descending through Andean cloud forest to reach the put-in. After a short safety briefing and instructional session from the specialist guide, hop in the rafts and take to the water. Navigate up to 17 miles of the best white-water east of the Andes. Depending on the water levels, the rafting adventure should take about three hours. After reaching the take-out, sit down for a riverside picnic lunch. Drive back to Quito arriving in the late afternoon.

Day 4

Fly Quito to Coca

Coca to Napo
This morning you will be collected from the hotel and taken to the airport for your flight to Coca in the northern Amazon Rainforest. The flight takes approximately 25-30 minutes crossing over the Andean mountains and rainforest.

On landing in Coca, transfer to the port and board a motor canoe for a two and a half hour navigation along the river. The last part of the journey is by dugout canoe via Blackwater Creek to the lake and lodge.

Please note that all flights to the Amazon have a weight limit of 20 kg per person. Any excess luggage can be left at your hotel.

The Amazon region in Ecuador is located to the east of the Andes mountain range. Within this vast green wilderness are numerous national parks and forest reserves sparsely populated with indigenous communities where you can experience the rainforest, its people, and myriad of wildlife.

River dolphin, tapir, capybara, caiman, monkeys plus countless species of birds are just a few of the magical animals that hide in these forests. Mostly unexplored and more biologically diverse than the enchanting Galapagos Islands, the opportunity to stay in one of Ecuador’s jungle lodges, lost deep in the rainforest, is a life enriching experience.

Day 5

Activities at Napo
Over the next two days, explore the surrounding Amazon in the company of an expert naturalist and a local guide. Each day there will be an early morning and late afternoon excursion, aimed at spotting the wildlife in their active hours. Visit the unique parrot clay licks and spot a wide variety of animals including caimans, giant otters, anacondas, sloths, lizards, tortoises, anteaters, armadillos and tropical birds, such as hummingbirds, toucans, parrots and macaws. Paddle in a dugout canoe along one of the creeks and look out for one of the 11 species of monkey. Take a night walk or an adventure by canoe with the aid of torches, revealing a very different selection of nocturnal wildlife.
