Day 2

Fly Sao Paulo to Manaus

Located in the heart of the jungle, 1600km up the Amazon river, the history of Manaus is as exotic as its location. Founded in 1669, Manaus has a colonial history which peaked during the late 19th century rubber boom. The fabulous wealth of this period led to the construction of the legendary opera house, where the most famous singers of the era performed.

The municipal market, designed after Les Halles in Paris, was built during the rubber boom, as was the custom house, designed and manufactured in Liverpool. However Manaus's main attraction, the rainforest, lies just outside the city, and boasts a wealth of exotic flora and fauna.

Day 3

Manuas embarkation, Rio Negro
Depart on the Rio Negro and by late afternoon enter one of the world’s largest river island systems, the Anavilhanas Archipelago. The boat will weave along a winding channel with rainforest on both sides in a riot of brilliant vegetation. Weather permitting, go for a launch excursion in the gnarled and dense flooded forest known as the Igapó. Along the river bank look for squirrel monkeys and listen for the other-worldly growls of howler monkeys echoing through the primitive rainforest. The Amazon has one of the greatest collection of birds in the world, look for some of these brightly colored jewels perched in the treetops.

Return to the M/Y Tucano for hors d’oeuvres on the observation deck and a toast to the rainforest sunset. Following dinner embark in the launches in search of nocturnal creatures such as the Caiman, the Amazon’s crocodilians.

Day 4

Rio Negro
Shortly after sunrise, explore the Anavilhanas Archipelago reserve, which includes the world’s largest system of river islands and tallest areas of dense rainforest. View the strange environment of the Igapó, the black-water flooded forest where dense forests grow out of the dark swamps of the Rio Negro.

Later, weather permitting, disembark and go for a walk in the Terra Firme rainforest region. Here, look out for the imprints of some of the Amazon’s great mammals, such as peccaries (wild pigs) or jaguars.

In the afternoon, travel in launches along the edges of the dense forest and listen to the sunset chorus of birds, howler monkeys, and frogs. Weather permitting, go out after dark to look for caiman (the Amazon’s crocodiles) and other nocturnal creatures.

Northern Brazil is dominated by the Amazon Rainforest; a vast tract of tropical wilderness divided by the enormous Amazon River basin. More than half of the Amazon River Basin is located within Brazil, supporting incredible biodiversity with an array of mammals, insects, reptiles and bird species.

Manaus, the capital of Amazonas State, serves as the main gateway into the depths of the Amazon Rainforest. Head downstream by boat to observe the natural phenomena known as the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ where the clay-coloured waters of Rio Solimões meet the black waters of Rio Negro and flow in parallel for six kilometres before converging to form the Rio Amazon.

Day 5

Rio Negro
This morning awaken to another remote rainforest area and explore early in launches, and later walk in the forest. During the middle of the day the vessel will venture downstream to a small village on the east bank of the Rio Negro. Late this afternoon visit this community to learn how traditions help families survive in the remote interior.

This evening voyage downstream through the night to the Xiborena Peninsula that divides two of the world’s most storied rivers: the Rio Negro and the Amazon River.

Day 6

Confluence of Amazon and Negro Rivers
Rising early, visit the Lago Janauari Ecological Park, a dense forest that is flooded with the coffee colored water of the Amazon River. Explore a labyrinth of small channels overhung with gargantuan trees and vines. Listening to the chatter of creatures in the undergrowth, keep your eyes open for monkeys, Three Toed Sloths, and the occasional Collared Anteater.

Following lunch navigate to the "Encontra das Aguas", the several mile long joining of two of the world’s greatest rivers, the Rio Negro and The Amazon. The dark and light waters run side by side for several miles without mixing. Often Pink River Dolphins and also Grey River Dolphins leap and cavort along this stark line of contrasting currents.

Late afternoon have another launch excursion in a fascinating environment known as the Varzea where it may be possible to fish for piranhas or thrill at brightly coloured birds that hunt in these the vast fields of waving grass.

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
