Travelling to Ethiopia is one of the most rewarding experiences, travelling by helicopter in Ethiopia is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Our ultimate helicopter journey travels across this magnificent country.

  • A unique opportunity to enjoy the best of Ethiopia by helicopter
  • View the ancient Christian churches of the Ethiopian highlands
  • Walk through the new Jerusalem and the rock hewn churches of Lalibela
  • Visit the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant in Axum

Journey back in time, where the history of the people and the land merge and at times it is difficult to determine myth from reality. Start by visiting the magnificent churches of Lalibela, from here continue to Ethiopia's highest mountain range, the Simiens and then onto Axum, with an opportunity to visit the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant.

See the Danakil Depression, a place of acid lakes, volcanoes and giant salt pans and visit the Tigray region, an amazing area where rock-hewn churches are perched on top of steep hills, only accessible by narrow foot paths which scale up the edge of the hills. Travelling by helicopter is a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience what this magnificent county has to offer, from a bird’s eye view, gaining access to the inaccessible.

Day 1

Fly London to Addis Ababa overnight

Day 2

Half Day Visit to Mount Entoto
After settling in, join your guide to explore Mount Entoto, the highest peak overlooking Addis Ababa. This eucalyptus-covered mountainside is the site that King Menelik chose to build his palace when he founded Addis Ababa.

Parts of the King's mud palace have been restored, whilst a small museum next to the Church of Bet Maryam exhibits a variety of artefacts - including traditional and religious costumes - from the time of King Menelik.

Afterwards, visit the church of Archangel Raguel, which is notable for its colourful Christian murals. Have the chance to get a glimpse of the iconography and practices of the Ethiopian Orthodox church.

Meaning 'New Flower' in Amharic, the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa contrasts strongly with preconceptions of this supposedly drought-ridden and barren country. Sitting on the temperate Abyssinian Plateau, the city's balmy climate makes it more tropical than desert-like.
A booming centre of commerce, Addis Ababa - often known merely as 'Addis' - is a city that seems to be constantly on the move.
Whilst it is full of culture, history and fine gastronomy, the city is also teeming with people which can at times seem overwhelming, but the more time spent exploring, the more the city will win you over.

Day 3

Helicopter from Addis Ababa to Lalibela

Depar for Lalibela, following the Blue Nile Gorge through astonishing landscapes. In the company of an expert guide, visit some of the famous 12th century rock-hewn churches.

Ethiopia's second holiest town, after Axum, Lalibela contains the most stunning Christian architecture in Africa. Often referred to as 'New Jerusalem' and 'The Eighth Wonder of the World', the town's eleven beautiful rock-cut churches draw pilgrims from all over the country.

Built during the 12th and 13th century, these religious monoliths are carved from the red volcanic rock. Unique for having been cut into living stone, their construction required the removal of vast quantities of rock.

A small rural town, Lalibela sits in the hills of the Amhara region and affords views over vast mountain landscapes. Cobblestone streets and a lack of cars make Lalibela a relaxingly peaceful place.

Day 5

Half Day Visit to the Southern Churches
After lunch at the hotel, set out again exploring the five rock-hewn churches that make up Lalibela's southern group. Cut deep into the rock on the other side of the River Jordan, tunnels join this group of churches to both the northern group and Bet Giyorgis.

Unlike the northern group, a number of these buildings are thought to originally have been built for another purpose. Experts believe that they include a former royal chapel, prison and royal palace.

Helicopter from Lalibela to Tigrae

Depart for the Simien Mountains. This is a spectacular flight following the course of the Tekeze River.

Day 6

Dawn Flight to the Simien Mountains
With a picnic breakfast on board, embark on a dawn flight to the Simien Mountains. With the sun behind, the spires and pinnacles are an impressive sight. Lammergerie vultures are found exclusively in mountainous terrain, and there are often great sightings of them soaring overhead.

After a picnic breakfast, continue the fascinating town of Axum.

In the afternoon, explore the Tigray region and its incredible rock-hewn churches, believed to date back to the 6th or 7th Century.

Day 7

Full Day Danakil Depression
This morning head to the Danakil Depression - a place of acid lakes, volcanoes and giant salt pans. Try and stop the camel trains of the Afar nomadic people en route and then visit Irta Ale, an active volcano of bubbling molten lava.

Day 8

Full Day Tigray
