Tailor-Made Holiday

Eastern & Oriental Journeys - Bangkok to Singapore

8 days

from £2,500pp (excluding flights)

Visit  the contrasting cities of Singapore and Bangkok, symbolising the excitement and diversity of Asian metropolitan life. The ultimate way to discover these iconic cities is to journey between them aboard the Eastern & Oriental Express, through gently unfolding rural landscapes, past temples, tea plantations, colonial cities, ancient villages and historic monuments.

  • Stay in the colonial outposts of Asia - Singapore and Bangkok.
  • The open air observation deck is a photographer's dream
  • Stop in Butterworth for a tour of Penang Island.
  • Sail on the River Kwai

Stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok's oldest and grandest of hotels and put yourself in the heart of the action, with all the major sites a short distance away. The four day signature rail journey starts from Bangkok, passes through Malaysia and terminates at Woodlands station in Singapore. On leaving the train we recommend you stay a night at the famous Raffles Hotel before flying home. The Eastern & Oriental Express combines well with a more in depth tour of Indo China or a beach stay on one of the many Thai islands. Please ask our experts to suggest ideas to extend your holiday.

Day 2

Day at leisure in Bangkok

If you enjoy cities then Bangkok is a must when visiting Thailand. Busy, hectic and sometimes overwhelming it is a true attack on the senses. With exquisite temples, a beautiful Grand Palace plus street markets and long tailed boats, there is so much to explore and enjoy. Glittering temples vie for space with modern skyscrapers and hotels, while quiet back lanes carry the sounds of every day life.

Embark on the Eastern and Oriental Express and travel to Kanchanburi

Day 4

Arrive in Kanchanaburi
Arrive in Kanchanaburi at 9:00. After breakfast, disembark at the River Kwai Bridge station for a leisurely cruise along the river, guided by a local historian. Later on in the morning, join a visit to a war museum followed by an optional visit to the war cemetery. Return to the train, for an 11:00 departure. Enjoy an exceptional lunch and dinner on board the train during the journey to Butterworth.

Kanchanaburi is 130km west of Bangkok in the valley of the Mae Klong River. During the Japanese occupation of WW II allied soldiers were used to build the infamous Death Railway along the Khwae Noi River (popularised by the film The Bridge Over the River Kwai). It is estimated that 16,000 prisoners of war and over 50,000 local labourers died during the building of the railway. Kanchanaburi is a charming town surrounded by picturesque countryside, and is well worth visiting, especially if you intend to go to the nearby Erawan National Park.

Day 5

Arrive in Butterworth
Take breakfast in bed, while watching the changing scenery as the train travels through Malaysia. After brunch, disembark at the Butterworth station (around 13:45) and cross to Penang Island, exploring its pre-World War II mosques, temples, churches, bazaars and shophouses. Rejoin the train for a refreshing cocktail accompanied by live piano music before a glamorous final dinner on board.

Butterworth is the principal town of Seberang Perai in the state of Penang. The town is the site of the Malayan Railway station for Penang and is linked to the island by the Penang Ferry Service and by the 13.5km Penang Bridge.
