Mount Fuji and Hakone

Home to the iconic sight of Mount Fuji.

Most famous for Japan’s most sacred mountain Mount Fuji, this region is also beautifully scenic, dotted with hot springs and high-end Ryokans (traditional Japanese Inn’s). If you are looking to relax and indulge, a few days in this area could be just the ticket.

Mount Fuji

Mount Fuji is 3,776 metres high, a now dormant volcano which last erupted in 1708 and is the highest peak in Japan. It is not surprising that the nearly perfectly shaped volcano has been worshipped as a sacred mountain and inspired many. Mount Fuji is notoriously elusive with visibility of the mountain often better during the colder months. It is officially open for climbing during July and August using several different routes.

Hakone

Hakone is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and is famous for its natural beauty, views of nearby Mount Fuji and hot springs or onsen as they are known locally.

The area is very scenic, with lakes including Lake Ashi, wooded hills and the Owakudani valley. Situated around a crater, created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone over 3,000 years ago, sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced on a walk around the area.

Paul Craven

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

I first travelled to Vietnam in 1988, when tourism was barely a concept, and have been visiting Central Asia since it was still behind the Iron Curtain. Such first-hand experience makes all the difference when talking to clients. I know the importance of asking questions, not taking the first answer as gospel, and matching the right destination to the right person.

Clare Wiggins

My love for Asia began with living there. Based in Vietnam and then Malaysia, I also explored the surrounding regions before eventually finding my way back home via China and the Trans-Siberian railway. At Steppes Travel, I get to share that love for Asia every day, helping clients experience the places I know best as if they were locals themselves.
