Grizzly Bear, Kodiak Island, Alaska

Bear Country: Katmai & Kodiak

The island of Kodiak is where the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is found, an area of wilderness that covers two-thirds of the island with rugged mountains, alpine meadows, wetlands, spruce forests and grassland.

The refuge is fantastic for fishing and a reason why over 2,000 bears are found here. Katmai National Park and Preserve is an active volcanic region surrounding Mount Katmai and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, and it is also an important habitat for salmon and home to the largest population of protected brown bears that come to feed.

Watch the Salmon Run

Whilst bears can be found throughout the state, Katmai and Kodiak offer the best opportunities for viewing brown bears in Alaska and in fact the world. Here, prolific bear populations thrive and offer generous viewing experiences throughout the season – the wild and untouched nature offer sanctuary to bears and an abundance of other wildlife. The best time to view the bears is between June and September, with no roads in the refuge viewing is done by air or from a remote wilderness lodge.

Sue Grimwood

In the late ’90s, I booked myself on an expeditionary voyage into the Antarctic Circle and was instantly hooked. Since then, I’ve returned to Antarctica a number of times and ventured deep into the Arctic – from Svalbard to the Russian and Canadian Arctic – always chasing that same sense of wonder. It’s this rare personal experience of the world’s polar extremes that I bring to every journey I plan.
