Church of Elijah, Suzdal, Golden Ring, Russia

Golden Ring

Amid plains, lakes and marshes of this vast country are scattered traditional Russian towns such as Suzdal, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Serigev Posad. Known collectively as the Golden Ring, they form a circle, which extends from Moscow towards the north-east.

It is this region, easily reached from Moscow, which will give a more detailed and historical insight into Greater Russia.

Each of these towns played an important part in the history, both in Russia’s early period, when the principalities were being united under Moscow, and later, when the independence of the country was at stake. While the architectural monuments found in these charming towns are the stone chronicles of the country’s history, it is also a region known for preserving artistic traditions, particularly the painting of the lacquer boxes, for which Russia is so famous.

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.
