Transylvania, ‘The Land Beyond the Forest’, is by far the best-known region in Romania but is much more than just vampires. It is an ancient land of wild mountains, picturesque villages, carnivorous predators, forested valleys, vibrant Roma communities and medieval towns.

Transylvania is home to over 150 fortified churches, standing as a testament to nearly 900 years of Saxon inhabitation. The Saxon villages throughout Transylvania have some wonderful boutique hotels, such as Viscri 125, from where it is possible to explore the surrounding countryside on foot or by bicycle or even try your hand at truffle hunting.

Staying in guesthouse accommodation gives a real feel for local culture and a great opportunity to sample traditional cuisine and home-distilled alcohol.
