La Merced Church, Granada, Nicaragua

Granada

Granada, or the ‘Gran Sultan’, is one of Latin America’s most beautiful colonial cities and is rightly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded in 1524 on the shores of the mighty Lake Nicaragua – it is famed as one of the oldest European settlements in the western hemisphere – it is full of history and Spanish colonial charm.

Everything is within easy walking distance from the Museo Comunitario to the bell tower of the church of La Merced, from a small cigar factory to the informative and fun experience that is Bate Bate Chocolate.
The city also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area, with volcanos such as Mombacho, the villages of Catarine and Pueblos Blancas and Las Isletas de Granada all within easy reach.

John Faithfull

This volcanic country offers an epic landscape of smoking cones, and one of John’s recommendations is to climb the young cindercone of Cerro Negro before tumbling down a vertiginous slope of light and (fairly) forgiving pumice scree.
