Antigua

Antigua is undoubtedly one of the most visited towns in Central America and it is easy to see why.

Astonishingly beautiful and remarkably traditional, wander around Antigua’s cobbled streets, its colourful market and peek through colonial doorways that hide colourful courtyards bursting with flowers and fountains.

Soak up the laidback atmosphere and the smiling welcome of the indigenous Maya with many of the women still in their traditional dress. Stay in one of the many characterful boutique hotels, sample Guatemalan culinary delights in the many small restaurants, shop for jade and textiles and enjoy the relaxed pace of life.

All About Antigua

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the colonial city of Antigua was once one of the regional capitals of the Spanish Empire. Peaceful and well-organised, the city is awash with elegant colonial architecture enlivened with pastel facades and clumps of colourful bougainvillea. Nestled between three towering volcanic peaks, Antigua is picturesque and charming. It is well worth spending a couple of days exploring the city, its squares and churches – many of which were destroyed in a series of earthquakes in the 18th century – and the surrounding countryside.

John Faithfull

John’s most recent trip to Guatemala was for Semana Santa (Holy Week), a heady mix of colourful processions where huge swaying floats are carried on the shoulders of purple-clad brotherhoods in high pointed headgear who shuffle through billowing clouds of incense.
