Ennedi

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ennedi is famous for its rock towers and arches and quivering yellow sands.

The Ennedi region has wonderful rock formations, most famous of which is the Aloba arch, which towers some 120 metres above the desert floor and must be one of the most incredible natural arches in the world.

In the south of the Ennedi region are gueltas (desert ponds), such as Guelta d’Archei. These desert ponds are a vital water source for the camel caravans and is home to the Sahara desert crocodile.

Ennedi Travel

Travelling through the Ennedi is by 4×4 (a minimum of two vehicles for safety reasons) and camping is in fly tents with roll mats and sleeping bags. Due to the nature of the environment/terrain in which you are in, conditions for camping are quite basic, in that you have limited water for washing – although you will be provided with a bucket for astro wash every day. However, any hardship is more than compensated for by the enormity of the landscapes around you and the brilliance of the stars at night.

Aside from the stunning scenery, you will have the opportunity to see some of the rock paintings and meet nomads travelling through the region.
