Visit Enchey Monastery, the Institute of Tibetology, Do Drul Chorten and the Cottage Industry.
Enchey Monastery is perched on a ridge above Gangtok and gives spectacular views of the town. Built in 1910 on the site of the hermitage of a tantric saint, Lama Drutob Karpo, the monastery houses monks of the Nyingmapa Order of Tibetan Buddhism.
The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology was established in 1958 and promote research in Mahayana Buddhism and the language and traditions of Tibet.
Adjacent to the institute are two exquisite stupas, the Do Drul Chorten, built to commemorate the victory of good over evil, and the Jhang Chub Chorten, built in the memory of Thrukshik Rinpoche, a devotee, spiritualist and interpreter of Buddhism.
Afterwards visit the Directorate of Handloom and Handicrafts, which was set up to promote traditional Sikkimese art and handicrafts. You can not only purchase items, but can also see the artisans at work.
Rumtek Monastery is situated 24km from Gangtok and houses monks of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Buddhism. Behind the monastery is the lavishly decorated Karmae Nalanda Institute of Buddhist Studies, which attracts students from all over the world.
