The Kimberley is a vast area, with a dramatic coastline of river networks, waterfalls, mangroves and tidal systems – truly one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. Less visited than many parts of Australia, partly due to its remoteness, a cruise is by far the best way to experience it. Perfect for anyone with a sense of adventure, wishing to explore the wilderness but not forgoing comfort, expert guides and delicious cuisine. This holiday also works brilliantly when twinned with some of Australia’s more ‘classic’ sites such as a visit to the iconic Uluru or the chance to laze in a hammock or swim with whale sharks on the Ningaloo Reef.

During this holiday you will cruise through mighty river systems, venture to the top and bottom of dramatic waterfalls, journey into dense mangrove forests, witness unique reef eco-systems, and explore caves, home to aboriginal art galleries. As well as accessing hidden areas by expedition boat, there is the chance to see some of the sites from the bird’s eye view of a helicopter.
There can’t be many better ways to see the splendours of this vast part of the world, with its maze of creeks and endless coast. Relax on secluded beaches, swim in hidden creeks, go fishing, mud crabbing, bird watching and croc spotting.
The True North is hard to beat in terms of on board comfort, cuisine and service, but still retaining a real sense of adventure. With a maximum of 36 passengers and an extremely high crew to guest ratio she has a more intimate feel with truly personal service and more flexibility than some other boats. A big wow factor is the ships onboard helicopter – this combined with the ships shallow draft and expedition boats allow access to otherwise inaccessible areas of this vast wilderness.
Generally Australian, the crew know the geography, history and wildlife of the area like few others and the food on board is sublime. Dine on delicious and sometimes unusual cuisine, from freshly picked black-lip oysters to pearl meat. Every sailing has a ships biologist on board who leads a team of six guides, one per expedition boat.
Coral Expeditions have three beautiful contemporary ships to choose from offering a more affordable luxury. Ranging in size from just 44 passengers through to 120, all have shallow drafts allowing them to access the best of the Kimberley and two of the three have extremely comfortable tender vessels capable of seating all passengers in comfort for river and beach excursions. The open bridge policy allows guests to observe and chat with the captain, and the attentive crew, expedition leaders and guest lecturers will both entertain and educate.
With plenty of deck space to explore, many of the cabins have balconies and additional facilities on some boats include a gym and lift.
The Kimberley is home to a wealth of wildlife. In the water you will surely see saltwater crocodile as well as the possibility of dolphin, dugong, tawny nurse shark and turtle. Birdlife is also abundant with several species of booby making this coastline its home as well as egret, pelican, tern, kingfisher and osprey.
On selected departures the True North visits three coral atolls known as Rowley Shoals. Covering roughly 145 square kilometres these remote and little-visited islands offer some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world.
Swim amongst large groups of big fish such as groupers and trevally as well as white and black shark plus many varieties of tropical fish.
Cruises along the Kimberley coastline run from April through to September with duration’s ranging from 13 to 10 and 7 nights. True North also operates a March departure tying in with the end of the wet season, when the waterfalls are thundering, billabongs are swollen and summer storms spectacular.
