Arenal Observatory Lodge

Perched on a ridge, Arenal Observatory Lodge is situated in a private nature reserve, less than two miles from Arenal volcano. It offers a safe vantage point from which to study the volcano and miles of trails on the doorstep to explore.

Arenal Observatory has 50 rooms of varying categories of accommodation. There are two junior suites, each with twin king-size beds and terraces; 23 Smithsonian rooms with a king-size bed and en suite bathroom; 15 standard rooms with a double bed and bunk bed also with an en suite bathroom. In addition, the White Hawk Villa with fully fitted kitchen, sleeps eight and is a little further from the main building. The villa has a glass front to encompass the breath-taking views of the volcano.

Why we Like It

We love Arenal Observatory Lodge for its unrivalled position. Located at the foot of Arenal Volcano Arenal Observatory Lodge has had a prime position to watch and record the volcanic activity. Before Arenal’s current passive state, the lodge afforded guests fantastic views of its flowing lava lighting up the night sky. We also choose this lodge for its surrounding trails where guests can explore alone the 870-acre property and discover the waterfalls, rainforest and wealth of animals in the area.

Every morning there is a complimentary two and half hour guided walk along the Saino trail that takes you through tropical gardens and verdant rainforest. Visit a waterfall and navigate hanging bridges before crossing the river and meeting the open-sided vehicle that will return you to the hotel. There are over 400 species of birds in the area, so you can explore on your own with a pair of binoculars at any time during your stay. Just 20 minutes from the lodge is a wonderful walk to a waterfall with a 20-foot drop or alternatively, relax in their spring-fed swimming pool and jacuzzi with fantastic views to Arenal. Off site, there are numerous activities to experience including horse-riding, zip line tours, hanging bridges, river floats, hot springs, sky treks and hikes onto the lava flows.
