Costa Rica - A Surfer's Paradise

15 days

from £3,225pp (excluding flights)

Costa Rica is well known for its diversity.  It is also a popular surf destination with an abundance of surf spots on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts for beginners and advanced surfers alike. This 15 day self-drive holiday takes you across Costa Rica visiting a selection of the interior highlights as well as two top surf destinations for those that wish to get their boardies on.

  • Surf from Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast
  • Visit Arenal and experience the majestic volcano
  • Explore the rainforest and wildlife of Costa Rica
  • Surf at Santa Teresa

Begin your holiday to Costa Rica in San Jose at the delightful Finca Rosa Blanca. Visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a rehabilitation centre for endemic animals, as well as hiking trails and waterfalls to visit.  Experience Poás volcano which has the largest active caldera in the world and Doka Coffee Plantation for a fantastic introduction to one of the country’s’ greatest exports.

Collect your hire car and continue your holiday to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and the melting pot that is Puerto Viejo. A unique blend of indigenous Bribri, Latino and Afro-Caribbean cultures all meet in this laid back town. There are a number of popular surf breaks along this stretch of coast, some for pros only with plenty of boards to break, others perfect for beginners particularly between Puerto Viejo and El Barco.  However, if travelling with a non –surfer there are lots of great activities that can be enjoyed in this area too, including snorkelling at Cahuita and a rainforest hike.

From Puerto Viejo drive north-west to Arenal.  Spend three nights at Arenal Nayara to be pampered and see one of Costa Rica’s most famous landmarks.  There is an abundant of activities to do in the area. We have included a day exploring the hanging bridges in the rainforest and also a safari float along the Penas Blancas River to observe wildlife such as monkey, caiman and birds.

Continue from Arenal and drive to the Nicoya Peninsula and the small beachside village of Santa Teresa. This area has become popular with a smart surfing crowd and a couple of superb hotels to boot.   The beach at Florblanca, Santa Teresa boasts lovely golden sands and there are a variety of beach breaks, point breaks and high swells for the more experienced surfers, as well as breaks for beginners at Playa Hermosa.  Surfing instructors are available to book for lessons.
Alternatively, activities at Florblanca include yoga classes, fishing, horse riding, zip line, mountain biking and the relaxing spa.

Return to Finca Rosa Blanca for a final night before flying home. From May 2016 British Airways will be flying twice a week, non-stop between London Gatwick and San Jose.

Day 1

Fly London to San Jose

Most visits to Costa Rica start and finish in San José, the country's capital. This bustling city lies in Costa Rica's Central Valley and has a year round, spring-like climate and a cosmopolitan feel. And while it may lack the impressive colonial architecture of other latin cities, it offers a handful of good museums, regular cultural events and excellent day trips into the surrounding countryside.

In the central highlands above San Jose, you will find the small towns of Alajuela and Heredia as well as numerous coffee plantations located on the fertile slopes of the Poas Volcano. The accommodation in this area offers a tranquil retreat that's just a short drive from San José's city centre.

You will be staying at Finca Rosa Blanca, Bed & Breakfast

Day 2

Poas, Doka and La Paz full day tour
Begin at Poas Volcano, which at 1.6 kilometres across is the largest active crater in the world. If the cloud cover and mist banks part, you will be treated to epic views from the look-out point of the bubbling green crater lake that is surrounded by smoking and steaming fumaroles.
After viewing the crater, you may wish to walk a short trail that will take you to a lookout point at nearby Botos Lagoon.

Continue from Poas to Doka Coffee Plantation, located on the fertile slopes of Poas Volcano. The bean-to-cup tour concludes with the opportunity to taste the various coffees produced by the estate.

Then head to the Caribbean Coast and La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the wildlfie rehabilitation centre. There are 3.5 kilometres of trails that wind through lush forest past five waterfalls, including a 120 foot drop. This is a terrific introduction to the flora and fauna of Costa Rica.

Lunch is included at the centre and after your tour, return to your hotel.

Arenal is an area of stunning scenery, waterfalls, forest and lake but the undoubted star attraction is Arenal Volcano. This perfectly conical volcano is currently entering a quiet phase with little volcanic activity but this huge geological feature has a very imposing presence and offers wonderful walking trails through the tropical forest that cloaks its base. Its geothermal activity also warms the hot springs that sooth many an aching joint.

As a centre for adventure sports, Arenal offers white water rafting, zip lining, canopy walkways, horse riding, canyoning, mountain biking, windsurfing and challenging hikes, all which can be enjoyed in the middle of some outstanding scenery.

Santa Teresa, once a small fishing village on the Pacific Coast of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is a lively upmarket town for surf enthusiasts and those in the know. Day 10

Surf Spots in Santa Teresa
Usually bigger and more hollow than Playa Carmen, Playa Santa Teresa presents a variety of beach breaks, point breaks and high swells for the more experienced surfers. The surf is better at low tide when waves tend to be faster. Playa Hermosa has a long sandy beach with easy going beach breaks, both lefts and rights, well suited for surf beginners. Further north at Manzanillo the reef is offshore at the north end of the beach. It is a very fickle wave which needs a lot of swell to work.
