Costa Rica is well known for its diversity. It is also a popular surf destination with an abundance of surf spots on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts for beginners and advanced surfers alike. This 15 day self-drive holiday takes you across Costa Rica visiting a selection of the interior highlights as well as two top surf destinations for those that wish to get their boardies on.
- Surf from Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast
- Visit Arenal and experience the majestic volcano
- Explore the rainforest and wildlife of Costa Rica
- Surf at Santa Teresa
Begin your holiday to Costa Rica in San Jose at the delightful Finca Rosa Blanca. Visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a rehabilitation centre for endemic animals, as well as hiking trails and waterfalls to visit. Experience Poás volcano which has the largest active caldera in the world and Doka Coffee Plantation for a fantastic introduction to one of the country’s’ greatest exports.
Collect your hire car and continue your holiday to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and the melting pot that is Puerto Viejo. A unique blend of indigenous Bribri, Latino and Afro-Caribbean cultures all meet in this laid back town. There are a number of popular surf breaks along this stretch of coast, some for pros only with plenty of boards to break, others perfect for beginners particularly between Puerto Viejo and El Barco. However, if travelling with a non –surfer there are lots of great activities that can be enjoyed in this area too, including snorkelling at Cahuita and a rainforest hike.
From Puerto Viejo drive north-west to Arenal. Spend three nights at Arenal Nayara to be pampered and see one of Costa Rica’s most famous landmarks. There is an abundant of activities to do in the area. We have included a day exploring the hanging bridges in the rainforest and also a safari float along the Penas Blancas River to observe wildlife such as monkey, caiman and birds.
Continue from Arenal and drive to the Nicoya Peninsula and the small beachside village of Santa Teresa. This area has become popular with a smart surfing crowd and a couple of superb hotels to boot. The beach at Florblanca, Santa Teresa boasts lovely golden sands and there are a variety of beach breaks, point breaks and high swells for the more experienced surfers, as well as breaks for beginners at Playa Hermosa. Surfing instructors are available to book for lessons.
Alternatively, activities at Florblanca include yoga classes, fishing, horse riding, zip line, mountain biking and the relaxing spa.
Return to Finca Rosa Blanca for a final night before flying home. From May 2016 British Airways will be flying twice a week, non-stop between London Gatwick and San Jose.
