In a bold project the creators of Amanyangyun have saved a slice of Chinese history by relocating and rebuilding 50 Ming and Qing dynasty villas and turning them into a peaceful retreat a short distance from Shanghai.
The 24 courtyard suites and 13 antique villas are set amidst more than 10,000 camphor trees, also rescued and relocated when their original home was threatened by the construction of a reservoir. The result is a beautiful low-rise hotel created using natural materials including wood, stone and bamboo. Facilities include indoor and outdoor pools and a spa, making this a wonderfully relaxing place to retreat to after a day exploring Shanghai.
Why we like Amanyangyun
The story behind this hotel is one of preservation and conservation and the result is a beautiful hotel in a magical setting with a fascinating history. Couple that with the service and attention to detail for which Aman are renowned and this is a fabulous choice from which to explore this part of China.
- Russian banya (a type of sauna) and hammam
- Indoor and outdoor pools
- Yoga and Pilates studios
- A choice of five dining venues serving Chinese, Italian and Japanese
Cultural activities on offer at the hotel include calligraphy, tea ceremonies and traditional painting. For the more active there is golf and tennis a short drive away and a little further afield is the metropolis of Shanghai and the canal towns of Suzhou and Hangzhou.
Amanyangyun is located 27 kilometres south of Shanghai and a short drive from Shanghai international airport.
