Chad Holidays

Little visited, Chad has for too long been a blank on the map. We are delighted that this is no longer the case and we now offer both group trips and tailor-made itineraries to this wonderful country. Justin, our Managing Director, has travelled to Chad several times to see the incredible work that African Parks are doing in Zakouma.

Why we like Chad

We love Chad because it is little known and virtually unexplored (and thus also sadly misunderstood). We love the people – the nomads en route are a sight to behold – the animals and the incredible landscapes. One of the best things about Chad is that you will mostly have the country to yourself. Travel brochures are not known for their restraint when it comes to effusive superlatives, but in Chad’s case they would be valid.

Chad is the nearest country to Europe that has the Big Five. Well, it soon will be with the reintroduction of rhino later this year. Aside from its elephants and lions, it has big populations of giraffes and buffalos and a great variety of smaller cats. A particular highlight is the birdlife of Zakouma. It is definitely the safari destination for those who are looking for something beyond the infinity pool.

In the north-east of the country is the Ennedi region, a sandstone bulwark of incredible rock towers and arches in the middle of the Sahara. A land of spaces and silence occasionally interrupted by the procession of a camel caravans traversing the sands. A magical region.

For the more pioneering spirits the breath-taking Tibesti Mountains await. Tibesti, which means “place where the mountain people live” is the domain of the Toubou people, nomads who rarely see westerners.

What to expect on your travels to Chad

Statistics talk of the poverty of the country (according to the United Nations it is the seventh poorest country in the world) and lack of security. Travel to Chad and you will confound and indeed overturn these preconceptions – the smiles, kindness and friendliness of the people of Chad are invigorating.

Chad is a large country. It is 1,284,000 square kilometres making it the seventh biggest country in Africa and over five times the size of the UK. Given its size there are some long travelling times – it takes three hours to fly to Zakouma in a Cessna and four hours to fly to Ennedi in a Caravan.

It is a hot, dry climate and can be dusty. However any discomfort due to heat and dust will be more than offset by your experiences whilst in Chad.

The main languages are French and Arabic. English is spoken but not widely.
