Sangha Lodge

Sangha Lodge is a labour of love. Having guided tours for Steppes to the region for a number of years, Rod fell in love with the region and moved out there permanently - as he says himself "this is home to me."

And what a home. A handful of simple wooden bungalows on the banks of the Sangha River with a small deck from where you can sit and watch fishermen drift past as the sun sets over a remote tropical jungle.

Large twin beds and mosquito nets, hot and cold running water and en-suite loos keep you comfortable, whilst the small kitchen, producing a mix of tasty western and African foods (given where you are, fish features high on the menu) keeps you fuelled for days in the forest. The well-stocked bar with essential cold beers and soft drinks keeps you hydrated whilst the family "pets" including cats, duikers and a pangolin, adds to the homely feel. Walks to nearby waterfalls and forest walks can all be arranged as can a trip to see the incredibly rare picathartes birds nests nearby.

Why We Like It

It is Rod’s commitment to the area and the passion of his small team of guides, researchers and staff who are effectively his extended family that shine through, many of whom rained at the lodge almost permanently during the recent troubles. Guests lucky enough to reach this remote outpost feel more family guest than eco-tourist and when not heading out like a proud parent to show off the nearby waterfalls, or rare picathartes nests near the lodge, Rod and his team do everything they can to make you feel welcome.
