Tailor-Made Holiday

Kayaking with Orcas in Canada

One Week kayaking around Vancouver island in search of Orcas

9 days

from £2,095pp (excluding flights)

This is a magical journey to the north eastern tip of Vancouver Island to witness some of the greatest marine mammals from an extraordinary vantage point.  Explore the waters by kayak with expert guides who read gull behaviour and follow the fish to bring you to some of Nature’s most awe-inspiring spectacles.

  • View pods of Orcas surfacing together
  • Watch Humpback Whales plunge through a school of bait fish
  • Kayak to Harbour Seal colonies
  • View Stellar Sea Lions, the largest seal lion in the world
  • Observe grizzly bears chasing salmon along BC’s rivers

To be out on a kayak watching killer whales surface with their unmistakable dorsal fins reaching six feet above the water is one of the most thrilling moments and is considered a once in a lifetime experience. The population of humpback whales in this area have made a huge comeback over recent years too and these mighty mammals have developed some new fishing techniques that have astounded scientists.  Between July and September experience these incredible marine animals for yourself.  You do not have to be an experienced kayaker to take part in this fantastic expedition and families are welcomed.

3 days will be spent on the water with kayaking sessions morning and afternoon. On the 4th day you will be taken by boat to Knight Inlet to view grizzly bears, a fantastic opportunity to see not only whales but the iconic brown bear, synonymous with British Columbia.  Guests will be returned to Port McNeill late afternoon for their departure arrangements.

Base Camp is simple but comfortable.  The accommodation is camping in flat base tents with cot beds and mattresses that can be made up as a twin or double bed.  A showering facility is available, but expect a rigged up bucket, and while there are no flushing loos, there is no question it is a loo with a view!

Time to Yourself
Vancouver is a city ideally explored on foot. The historic buildings of Gastown combined with the colourful Chinatown district offer a great contrast highlighting the diversity of Vancouver. Head down to Granville Market any day of the week and try some local produce. There are many art galleries and museums in the downtown area of the city that are worth a visit. Day 4

Port McNeill to Base Camp
This morning you will be met and taken to the marina, just a short walk from your hotel, to load up the water taxi. Your luggage will be transported separately by van. Any excess luggage you may have, can be left at your hotel.

The water taxi ride is approximately one hour to base camp. Upon arrival you will be given a site orientation as well as a kayak and safety briefing. There will be an opportunity to kayak before lunch to find your sea legs and the wonderful wilderness setting. After lunch you will be back on the water to discover the diverse wildlife in this region.

Day 5

Base Camp
Typically, over the next couple of days you will have morning and afternoon kayaking sessions, exploring the beautiful landscape and wildlife opportunities, with a break for lunch in between, usually spent on a secluded beach. However the guides will plan each day according to the weather, the wildlife viewing and the guests' interests.

The camp is ideally located to maximise wildlife experiences as it is located on the orca travel routes, and it is a common occurrence to see humpback whales feeding within site of the camp. It has been known to view both the orcas and humpbacks whilst having dinner on the beach. If the whales are in close range, a hydrophone can be dropped in the water to give guests a wonderful insight into the underwater communications.

"Roxy filled us with enthusiasm and came up with some great ideas for a trip. We liked the idea of a slightly 'off the beaten track experience' and some private bespoke activities and that's exactly what we've had. Thank you!"

"Roxy created a wonderfully interesting route which was the basis for a super trip. She also chose lovely places for us to stay and interesting activities for us to participate in, introducing us to the idea of private guided experiences which we thoroughly enjoyed."
