This holiday through the Canadian Rockies combined with the wildlife of Vancouver Island is perfect for first time travellers wishing to experience the very best of this extraordinarily picturesque destination.

This holiday begins with a few nights in the heart of downtown Vancouver.  A wide variety of shops, bars and restaurants are all within striking distance and there are numerous sites of interest including Gastown and Chinatown, Stanley Park or the Capilano suspension bridge.

Vancouver Island

From Vancouver travel to Knight Inlet, a floating lodge accessible only by floatplane in a remote corner of Vancouver Island. Spend two days searching for bears, kayaking, whale watching and hiking in the lush rainforest surroundings.

The Rocky Mountaineer

Board the Rocky Mountaineer and travel through scenic valleys and dramatic landscape. The journey from Vancouver to Jasper follows the route of the Fraser River, home to the largest salmon run in British Columbia.  Pass by the Albreda Glacier with incredible views of the Pyramid Falls, however the highlight of this route is the majestic Mount Robson; the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

If budget allows we highly recommend upgrading to Gold-Leaf service which offers a glass dome coach, perfect for making the most of the incredible views. Also have access to a large open-air area at the back of the train and superior overnight accommodation. All meals beverages and snacks are complimentary throughout the trip.

Jasper & Banff National Parks

Once in Jasper take a boat trip on Maligne Lake and learn about the local history, geology, wildlife and glaciology of this stunning and dramatic area. To upgrade this holiday talk to our experts about staying at Glacier View Lodge, where you can take a private evening tour on the Athabasca Glacier with canapés and mulled wine. Collect a hire car and journey along the Icefield Parkway, through the Rockies to Lake Louise in Banff National Park. Stretching over 140 miles, this spectacular route winds its way through the heart of the Rockies, via two national parks and some jaw-dropping scenery. Arrive at the glittering green waters of Lake Louise where numerous outdoor activities are available to make the most of this striking landscape.

Day 1

Fly London to Vancouver

Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains of British Columbia, Vancouver is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, bustling throughout the year. Renowned for its scenic beauty and endless outdoor activities, there is plenty of opportunity to get out and about. Get active and cycle through Stanley Park, explore the North Shore mountain trails, visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge or head out on kayak to explore English Bay.

Day 2

Tour of Vancouver with private guide
Take in the best of Vancouver on this private tour. See the highlights of downtown and the unique neighbourhoods of Chinatown and historic Gastown. Immerse yourself in Stanley Park and its famous Totem Poles. Pass by English Bay and visit Granville Island Market.

Feel free to discuss with your driver if there is something in particular you would like to see.

Day 3

Victoria Flightseeing Tour - Mail Run
Ride along with the locals on this scenic flight from Vancouver Harbour. Travel over the tiny villages and anchorages of the beautiful islands that line the west coast, before landing in the heart of a seaside village on Saltspring Island. Hop off onto the island for an hour or the day and stroll through some of the quaint local shops before returning on an afternoon scenic flight to downtown Vancouver.

Day 4

Fly Vancouver to Campbell River

Set on the east coast of Vancouver Island, Campbell River is renowned for its rich fishing waters that not only draw keen fishermen to the area, but also wildlife enthusiasts. With all five species of Pacific salmon, the waters here are key feeding grounds with prime orca and grizzly bear habitats found in the Johnstone Strait. This region boasts incredible scenery with a scattering of small islands creating many hidden areas that are perfect for wildlife to thrive. From spring through to autumn this area thrives.

Day 5

Travel from Campbell River to Knight Inlet (Air Transfer Journey)

Days at Knight Inlet are spent exploring the wilderness and viewing the wildlife including the grizzly bears that can be seen in high numbers in this area (in season). Excursions are either by boat or at one of the strategically placed viewing stands. Enjoy a scenic boat tour of Glendale Cove to explore the scattered islands and the prolific wildlife.

Set admist the snow-capped peaks of Canada's rugged coastline, Knight Inlet is a wild and remote area of British Columbia set between the mainland and Vancouver Island, home to one of the largest concentrations of grizzly (brown) bears in western Canada.

Day 8

Rocky Mountaineer Journey Day 1 - Vancouver to Kamloops

Today board the Rocky Mountaineer at Vancouver Station.

Pass through the fertile Fraser Valley and the Fraser Canyon. At Hell's Gate watch water pass through the walls of the canyon at its narrowest point, this is one of the canyon's true natural treasures. Upon leaving the Fraser canyon, the train will follow the South Thompson River to the city of Kamloops.

Upon arrival to Kamloops you will be transferred by coach to your accommodation.

Day 9

Rocky Mountaineer Day 2 - Kamloops to Jasper

Rejoin your train this morning to continue your trans-mountain rail journey.

Leaving Kamloops travel through the rolling hills of the Thompson River valley to the snowy peaks of the Monashees. Enjoy a breath taking view of Pyramid Falls and experience the vast expanses of the Albreda Icefield glaciers. Shortly before arriving in Jasper National Park you will have the opprtunity to view Mount Robson that reaches 12,972 feet at its peak. This is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

Day 10

Half day tour with private guide
Half day (5 hour) private sightseeing tour, starting and ending in Jasper.

Explore the largest national park in the UNESCO Canadian Rockies marked by dramatic mountains, thick forests, glaciers and vast valleys. Home to nearly 70 species of mammals including black bear, moose, bighorn sheep and mounain goats the park often offers good wildlife sightings. Explore the 615 miles of hiking trails that offer access throughout the park or travel by road on one of the spectacular mountain drives.

This day is flexible so you can create a tour program that will move at your pace and on your schedule or just sit back and let your driver guide you for the day. (Please call Sun Dog Tours at 780 852 4056 to reconfirm your pick-up time and be in the hotel lobby 10 minutes prior to present your voucher to the driver.)

Maligne Lake Cruise
The 90-minute interpretive cruise travels 14 km down the lake through Sampson Narrows and onto Spirit Island. The vessels are staffed by recognised Heritage Tourism Guides and Coast Guard licensed pilots. Learn of the local history, geology, wildlife and glaciology of Maligne Lake and of Jasper National Park as some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rockies drift past your window. At Spirit Island the boat lands to allow for a short walk to the viewpoint overlooking the mountain ringed southern shores of Maligne Lake.

Departs daily on the hour from the Maligne Lake Dock:

Mid-May to early October: between 10:00am and 4:00pm

July - August: additional departure at 5:00pm

Self Drive from Jasper to Lake Louise along the Icefields Parkway

Drive from Jasper to Lake Louise in Banff National Park, travelling along the famous Icefield Parkway. Stretching over 140 miles with a journey time of approximately three and a half hours, this route is one of the most spectacular in the world. Winding through the Rockies, surrounded by dramatic mountains, emerald lakes, ancient glaciers and cascading waterfalls, there are many spots to pull over and soak up the magical scenery.

Day 12

Private Mountain Lakes & Waterfalls
Half Day tour visiting Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. This is a great opportunity for photographing the Canadian Rockies. Cross the Great Divide into Yoho National Park via the scenic Kicking Horse Pass. Take in Takakkaw Falls, in the magnificent Yoho Valley before returning to Lake Louise.

Day 13

Time to Yourself at Moraine Lake
Set in the heart of the UNESCO Candian Rocky Mountains World Heritage Site, Moraine Lake Lodge is perfectly placed for exploring the national parks of this region. Spend time exploring the parks of Yoho and Banff that are easily accessible by car and the Valley of the Ten Peaks that offers hundreds of breathtaking trails each providing a truly unique experience.
