The tour starts with a flight to Banteay Chhmar, a large temple complex in Banteay Meanchey province in northwest Cambodia. Banteay Chhmar was constructed during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 12th and 13th century and resembles Angkor Thom. The next stop is Preah Vihear, a Khmer temple situated in the Dangrek Mountains in Cambodia. As a key edifice of the empire's spiritual life, it was supported and modified by successive kings and so bear's elements of several architectural styles. Affording a view for many kilometers across a plain, it has the most spectacular setting of all the temples built during the six-century-long Khmer Empire.

Continue to Koh Ker, which was briefly the capital of the Khmer empire. The Koh Ker site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30 meter tall temple mountain raising high above the plain and the surrounding forest.

The last stop is Boeng Mealea, surrounded by moats with three enclosing galleries around a central sanctuary, home to extensive carving of scenes from Hindu mythology and causeways with the seven-headed Naga serpent. Smaller in size than Angkor Wat, Boeng Mealea nonetheless ranks among the Khmer empire's larger temples.

Phnom Penh is a changing and developing city. A city of contrasting sights, sounds and fortunes, the capital of Cambodia is at a crossroads - with a recent inrush of investment it has started to leave behind a history defined by poverty and war. Now this is a city blending old and new, where hardship and exotic extravagance stand practically side by side - but this is what makes Phnom Penh such an alluring and wonderful city. It is an endearingly ramshackle city, a city with an edge.

Providing history, culture and indulgence in equal measure, Phnom Penh is one of the jewels in South East Asia's crown.
