Tailor-Made Holiday

Botswana - The Selinda Adventure Trail

Water and wildlife on the Selinda Spillway

9 days

from £4,695pp (excluding flights)

The Selinda Adventure Trail offers an immersive experience, at the heart of one of Africa’s most exciting ecosystems. Spend five days canoeing or walking along the Selinda Spillway, which links the Okavango with the Linyanti River.

  • Meander through waterways, fly camp in comfort and tramp through pristine wilderness
  • Encounter varied wildlife, including large concentrations of elephants and buffaloes
  • Spend nights under the stars, at camps set up for you.

Begin by helicopter, from the Selinda airstrip, setting down at the start of the Adventure Trail. From here, start following the winding Selinda Spillway, which cuts its way through an exclusive conservation concession.

Whilst walking is guaranteed, the variable nature of the spillway – which only recently began flowing again – means that canoeing is dependent on water levels. However, both offer the chance to immerse yourself in this fascinating landscape, leaving behind the trappings of modern life.

The trail is a journey through the rivers of the north east, which operates annually between May and early September with weekly departures. With only eight guests on each departure, the trail provides a uniquely personal opportunity to reconnect with nature amidst magnificent scenery

The verdant and varied nature of this region means that the birdlife is particularly spectacular, but it also home to a wide variety of large mammals. Spot elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards, as well packs of hunting wild dogs.

Upon finishing the trail, transfer to the wonderful Selinda Explorers camp, for a taste of comfort and relative sophistication. Here, relax and savour the relative luxury of the camp, whilst also having the chance to set out on conventional game drives, in search of big game.

Why We Like It

The Selinda Adventure Trail offers an experience that makes the most of the wilderness that Botswana has to offer, showcasing an area that is alive with animal and bird life.

Selinda Reserve is a privately owned, 135,000 hectare concession located on the flood plains of the Selinda spillway and part of the great Linyanti Reserve. Exclusive and high end privately owned camps combine with excellent guides, to make Selinda Reserve one of our favourite concessions. Here its possible to join a unique canoe safari - or just enjoy the expanse of land in relative privacy.

Selinda Adventure Trail
The trail begins at Selinda Airstrip in the mid-afternoon, followed by a exhilirating helicopter transfer to a remote point along the Selinda Spillway.
Once your guide has given you a safety briefing, the trail starts with a short, late-afternoon canoe along the Spillway before you arrive at the evening’s first camp. As there is a minimal distance to be covered on the first day and also due to the fact that all the equipment is carried with the group, you will paddle until just before sunset at a suitable site on the banks of the Selinda Spillway. If the water level is low then it will be a walk to camp.

Day 3

Selinda Adventure Trail
After an early wake-up call, tea or coffee and light breakfast while the camp is being dismantled, head out on the canoes for a full day of paddling, with lunch en route and the possibility a stretch of the legs if you come across something worth investigating on foot. Tonight you will camp in another suitable location as you gradually make your way down the Spillway.

Day 4

Selinda Adventure Trail
An early breakfast fuels you for a day of exploration on foot. You will venture into the islands and lagoons formed by the flood waters each season.

It is only possible to enter this area by foot. There are antelope a plenty and large herds of elephant and buffalo, a humbling experience to have on foot. The length of day is tailored to the group, and either way a cold refreshment is waiting.

Day 5

Selinda Adeventure Trail
Up again for an early breakfast, camp is taken down, before you continue along the water course by canoe for another full-day excursion and set up camp for the last night of this trail.

Day 6

Selinda Adventure Trail
You head out after breakfast, aiming to finish around mid-morning. At this point you are met by the vehicle and transferred by road to Selinda Explorers Camp. Road transfer from camp to Selinda airstrip.

Day 7

Days at Selinda Explorers
Full days exploring this area on activities offered by the camp. You have at least two game activities a day - one in the morning and one in the evening, but like all good camps, flexibility is key.

Before you finish for the day your guide will confirm with you the following morning's activities, whether you wish to go out early in the morning as the sun rises or have a more leisurely start to the day after a hearty breakfast.

Midday, during the heat of the day, tends to be siesta time - for both humans and animals. Then, after tea you depart on another safari excursion in the late afternoon, returning just after sunset. The beauty of the camp is that this is very much about getting out and exploring, possibly by canoe, but mostly with the chance to enjoy game drives further afield.

Bridget Cohen, Travel Expert

"Bridget had a great knowledge of the areas being looked at and given I have spent time in both countries, it required someone who completely understood the type of camps preferred."

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
