Romantic Safari through South Africa and Botswana

11 days

from £4,595pp (excluding flights)

Set out on a romantic star-bed safari across southern Africa, staying at a handful of spectacular camps. Combining South Africa’s Madikwe Reserve with Chobe and the Okavango Delta, this journey incorporates a beautiful array of landscapes and offers fantastic wildlife-spotting opportunities.

  • Indulge with three nights at Makanyane, renowned for its excellent cuisine and fine wines
  • Take a sundowner cruise on the Chobe River; watch elephants and buffaloes graze on its banks
  • Sleep under the night sky in the star beds of Baines’ or in the sleep-out hide at Makanyane
  • Spot a huge variety of wildlife on a trip that features wonderfully contrasting landscapes

SOUTH AFRICA

Begin with the Madikwe Reserve, close to the Botswanan border, staying at the secluded Makanyane Safari Lodge. Hidden amongst leadwoods and other flora, this beautiful camp blends in perfectly with its natural environs.

The glass-fronted suites offer an up-close, uninterrupted natural experience – ameliorated by a healthy dose of safari luxury. This fantastic camp is renowned for its beautifully prepared food and award-winning wine, whilst the bush spa means pampering and relaxation remain firmly on the menu.

In spite of these luxuries, the feel of the camp remains wild, with game often spotted roaming past the suites’ perfectly positioned decks. To make the most of its beautiful locale, spend a night beneath the Milky Way, in the camp’s romantic sleep-out hide. Out of the camp, experience fantastic wildlife viewing. As well as big-five game, spot a variety of birdlife and less common species, such as wild dogs.

BOTSWANA

Return to Johannesburg and fly to Kasane, in Botswana, where the nearby Chobe Chilwero Camp offers an idyllic location, positioned between the Chobe River and the elephant-rich national park. Spend a day exploring in search of these abundant pachyderms, before cruising on the tranquil, crimson-tinged river at dusk – the highlight of any stay at Chobe Chilwero.

Continue deeper into Botswana’s interior, to the wonderfully positioned Baines’ Camp, found at the heart of the Okavango Delta. Explore this fascinating landscape, rich in both water and land-based wildlife. Venture deep in to the labyrinth of channels and lagoons by mokoro and drive across fertile grasslands in search of big game.

Marvel at the secluded serenity of Baines’ Camp, which looks out over the swirling waters of the delta, raised above the wind-stroked papyrus bed the surround it. To make the most of this wild, romantic location, spend a night sleeping out on deck in the camp’s wonderful star beds. Gaze up at the unpolluted African sky, with only a mosquito net in between.

WHY WE LIKE IT

This wonderful, romantic odyssey redefines safari – merging indulgence with an unspoilt wilderness experience. It brings nature closer, whilst simultaneously pampering in a way that does nothing to negate the uniquely wild nature of the trip. Sleeping under the stars epitomises the romantic appeal of this distinctive journey, which also delivers fantastic wildlife encounters and phenomenal landscapes.

Day 2

Travel from Johannesburg to Madikwe

One of South Africa's largest game reserves, Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five and has a healthy African wild dog population. Bordering Botswana, which lies to its north, the reserve is one of the best run in the country. Some 8000 animals including lion, elephant, cheetah, rhino and buffalo were introduced to the reserve during one of the biggest wildlife translocation projects in the world, "Operation Noah" some 20 years ago and have flourished in this unique environment.

You will be staying at Makanyane Safari Lodge, All inclusive

Day 3

Days at Makanyane Lodge
Explore the Madikwe Reserve, found on the edge of the arid Kalahari region. Richly diverse and packed with wildlife, this area is a wonderful place to spot an array of impressive animals. Game drives run twice a day, with afternoon drives extending into the night, allowing for the spotting of - often elusive - nocturnal species. As the sun sets, stop for sundowners amidst this magnificent landscape.

For a different experience, set out on foot and take part in a guided walking safari. Learn about the nuances of the bush and spot the tell-tale clues that big game leaves behind. Additional activities, which can be arranged, include cultural village tours and a trip across the border to the Botswanan capital of Gaborone.

The open floodplains around the river make ideal viewing for a boat or vehicle safari. Chobe National Park is a great gateway location to other Botswana highlights, situated only two and half hours from Victoria Falls and Livingstone.

Day 6

Activities at Chobe Chilwero Camp

Also have the chance to take to the water and cruise along the Chobe River. Sundowner cruises are a speciality at Chobe Chilwero. Watch elephants and buffaloes on the verdant banks, whilst sipping a cocktail as the sun sets over the water.

The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest and most beautiful inland water systems, with perpetual and seasonal swamps and floodplains. Its waterways glisten like the fine silks of a spider's web and its numerous habitats offer superb breeding grounds for an abundance of wildlife. Depending on camp, activities centre on game drives, mekoro (local dugout canoe) trips, walking and horseback safaris. It is therefore a must for any first time visitor to Botswana.

You will be staying at Baines' Camp, All inclusive

Day 8

Activities at Baines' Camp
Explore the watery landscape of the private concession within which Baines' Camp is situated. Set out on game drives - both during the day and at night - in search of wildlife. Expect to spot lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos, cheetahs, giraffes, impalas, zebras, wild dogs, hyenas and hippos.

Also explore by boat and on foot, with each offering a very different perspective. The waterways and lagoons of the Okavango are best navigated by traditional mokoro, but motorised boats are also available and allow for game viewing further afield. Walking safaris are led by an expert guide and are a wonderful way to discover this intriguing landscape.

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
