Japan’s enduring allure is beyond question, drawing visitors from across the globe for its blend of tradition and modernity.

Yet, with its rising popularity, truly authentic experiences in the country can be difficult to find.

We spoke to one of our travel experts, Clare, who shared five places to visit in Japan that she considers beyond the ordinary:

Matsushiro, Nagano, Japan

Nagano

Nestled amongst the mountains, Nagano is an ideal base for your trip to Japan.

Start with an overnight stay at the Buddhist temple of Fuchinobo and enjoy traditional Japanese hospitality. From there, head to Togakushi, a quiet town of lush forests and home to the intriguing Ninja Museum.

Conclude your stay with an immersive Samurai experience in the town of Matsushiro, learning the ways of these ancient warriors.

Kinosaki Onsen, Japan

Kinosaki Onsen

Kinosaki Onsen is a picture-postcard perfect holiday destination, with quaint wooden buildings, traditional inns and beautifully maintained gardens.

Make sure to visit the renowned thermal springs during your trip. This shouldn’t be challenging, given that the town boasts seven public bathhouses. Many believe the mineral-rich waters of Kinosaki Onsen have healing properties, providing relief from stress and fatigue.

Stay at a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, to fully immerse yourself in the local culture. They often feature tatami-matted rooms, sliding shoji doors and futon-style sleeping arrangements.

Toyama, Chubu, Japan

Toyama

Hidden in the Chubu region, Toyama offers a covetable glimpse into Japan’s rich rural heritage.

This area is a living museum, where tradition and craftsmanship thrive. Local artisans work hard to preserve the Mingei folk art movement, which celebrates the beauty of everyday objects created by hand. Take part in a workshop and try your hand at pottery or weaving, guided by a master who has honed their craft over decades.

In addition to the vibrant artisan scene, Toyama is home to centuries-old Buddhist customs. The resident monks still practise these today, playing a vital role in the spiritual life of the region. Visitors are often welcome to observe the rituals and ceremonies that have been passed down through generations.

Urato Islands, Japan

Sendai and the Urato Islands

For a culinary adventure like no other, begin at the Sakanamachi Fish Market in Matsushima.

Take your time to sample some of the market’s specialties, such as sashimi made from the freshest catch of the day. You may also want to try the region’s famous oysters, known for their rich flavour and creamy texture.

After indulging at the market, take a scenic ferry ride to the Urato Islands. There, you can join a guided food tour highlighting the unique culinary traditions of the islands. Sample local dishes made using traditional methods passed down through the generations: grilled fish, sea urchin and shellfish.

Draw your culinary adventure to a close by visiting local villages, to learn about fishing practices and the importance of sustainable seafood.

Finally, make your way back to the mainland and head to Sendai, the vibrant capital of the Tōhoku region. Be sure to visit historic sites such as the Sendai Castle ruins and the Zuihoden mausoleum, which honour the legacy of the feudal lords.

Kakunodate, Japan
Kakunodate, Japan

Kakunodate

Just four hours north of Tokyo, Kakunodate is one of the best places to go in Japan to view the iconic cherry blossoms without the crowds.

This charming town is renowned for the stunning sakura (cherry blossom) trees. They line the streets, creating a canopy of delicate pink and white blooms across early May.

Kakunodate is also known for its well-preserved samurai district. Once home to 80 samurai families, it has some of the best Edo era architecture in the country. Six houses are open to the public and provide the chance to see how middle class and wealthy samurai families might have lived.
