If there’s anyone who can help you see El Salvador in a new light, it’s Eduardo – one of our trusted local partners from Salvadorean Tours. Passionate, curious and endlessly knowledgeable, Eduardo’s personal story is woven into the fabric of the country he loves to share with visitors. I sat down with him for a chat about his journey, what makes El Salvador so special and why he’s excited about the country’s future.
Can you tell me a little about your background?
I was born in El Salvador, but because of the civil war, my family moved to the United States. In 1997 I came back and that was really the first time I could start to explore my own country. Before that, it just wasn’t safe and there were areas I couldn’t go to – as a young man I could have been kidnapped by guerilla forces.
I’d always wanted to discover more about my home country, so when I returned I started to travel around. In 2000, the opportunity came up to train as a guide. I spent about two and a half years in guiding school, but back then there weren’t really any tourists. People mostly came to El Salvador for work and if they had a free day, they might want to explore.
It wasn’t until around 2005 that we started to see real tourism. Since then, I’ve continued learning. Each year I study a little more to refresh my knowledge, get updated information and deepen my understanding. That’s how I’ve really got to know my country – by living it and by sharing it.
What inspired you to train as a guide?
A big part of it was my experience living abroad. When I was in the U.S. and Canada, I’d meet people who didn’t even know where El Salvador was on the map. That made me want to show them just how beautiful and rich in history it really is.
I speak the language, I love history and I love talking to people so it felt natural. It was a way to show off my country and make a living doing something I genuinely enjoy.
What is your favourite part of guiding?
I enjoy teaching. Clients sometimes ask if I’m a teacher, a volcanologist or a geologist. I’m not, but I do love knowledge. I’m like a virus – once I’m interested in something, I can’t stop until I know more. Honestly, even when I’m not working, I love going out and visiting different places.
What are your top experiences in El Salvador that visitors shouldn’t miss?
There are a few that stand out, depending on your interests.
For hiking, Santa Ana volcano is a must. It’s a great challenge and you’re rewarded with stunning views. For architecture, Iglesia El Rosario Church in San Salvador is completely unique in Central America. It looks like nothing else in the region.
Nature lovers should head to Jiquilisco Bay, where you can take part in turtle conservation. It’s a hands-on experience where you can help measure and tag the turtles before releasing them. It’s not just meaningful; it’s beautiful. That’s definitely one of my highlights.
History-wise, I’d recommend Perquín for its connection to the civil war and the murals in Ataco are incredible – they tell so many stories. Personally, I love the Ruta de Las Flores, especially the waterfalls. I’ve never seen waterfalls like that anywhere else. They’re special, particularly for people who love hiking.
You’ve guided travellers from all over the world, what has that been like?
I really enjoy guiding people from the UK. They’re so open-minded and curious, and they’re not afraid to ask questions. Even if I don’t know the answer right away, I always do my best to find it for them. I want them to leave El Salvador with a deeper understanding than when they arrived.
How would you describe El Salvador today to someone who only knows its past reputation?
We were once known mostly for violence. But that’s not the case today. Things have changed – a lot. It’s a completely different country now and we’re proud of that. There’s so much culture here, so much natural beauty and such a rich history. El Salvador is rising. I want people to see that for themselves.
