What is your standout travel memory in India?

India’s full of great experiences, but my most scary one was when I was looking for a tiger reserve to manage in 2009. I was in Corbett Country, walking in the forested foothills of the Himalayas, when we encountered drunk poachers. There was a scary standoff as they hid and we tried to get them to reveal themselves. We knew full well we could do very little about the wave of poaching that we encountered unless we could give these villagers an alternate livelihood to feed their families. It’s a hard lesson, but it illustrated much of what I was doing for 20 years in India.

What excites you about the adventure you’re hosting for Steppes?

The joy of showcasing success. An astounding tiger recovery story. India has saved its Bengal tigers from extinction and we can show you the glorious results. Fabulous parks, packed with tigers and amazing wildlife.

Is there anywhere still on your must-travel list?

India has 53 tiger reserves, many of which I have not seen, and thousands of other stunning natural wonders, so this is a lifetime of exploration and enjoyment.

What can we all do to help protect wildlife?

Get out, enjoy and experience wildlife and wilderness. Paying responsible operators for your visit and your stay is the most critical factor that will ensure its future, in a world that often sees nature as valueless, disposable and of no benefit to humankind.
