  • Snorkel in a tropical marine underworld along the second largest barrier reef in the world

This Belizean odyssey begins on your arrival to the airport where you will be met and driven to the famous Belize Zoo which began as a rehabilitation centre and has developed to become a centre of education in the country. Continue to the refreshing Cayo District home to lush jungle, babbling brooks and tumbling waterfalls. Here you can immerse yourselves in modern and ancient cultures and explore the jungle interior.

Take a light aircraft to the Toldeo District deep in the south of Belize, bordering Guatemala. Here the Mayan culture is strong and wonderful community tours can be enjoyed with hands on involvement as well as kayaking expeditions.

Finally end your holiday with a few days on the beautiful white sand beaches of Placencia. Gorge on ice cream at the famous parlour in the village of Placencia or venture further afield and explore sleepy Garifuna towns, trying creole food or head out to the reef for some spectacular snorkelling and diving experiences.

Day 1

Upon arrival, meet your private driver.

Drive from Belize City to Cayo District via the City Zoo

The Cayo District has a wonderful geography of cave networks, numerous waterfalls and the Macal and Mopan Rivers. It represents a superb natural yet rustic outdoor playground for the adventurous traveller. And for the historian, Cayo's rainforests hide the magnificent Mayan ruins of Xunantunich and Caracol.

Cayo is also home to little known Belmopan, the country's capital, and the bustling town of San Ignacio where people embrace a remarkable cultural diversity.

You will be staying at Pook's Hill, bed and breakfast

Day 4

Day Visiting a Cocoa Plantation and Local Villages
After breakfast this morning, your guide will take to San Felipe and the Maya village of Kek’chi to meet your host for the day Juan Cho, a local tour guide who runs his own organic Cocoa plantation.

This is a great family outing where visitors can enjoy a tour of the plantation on the banks of the River Moho and learn about organic farming methods and taste the sweet seeds from the cacao pod. You will also have the chance to ride in a dugout canoe up the Moho river to Santa Ana village before returning to Juan’s home to enjoy a cup of cocoa with his family and learn about the fermentation process.

You will be staying at The Lodge at Big Falls, bed and breakfast

Day 5

Half Day Kayaking Expedition
After breakfast you will be driven six miles to the village of San Miguel where the expedition begins.

Kayak downstream back to The Lodge at Big Falls, which takes between 3 ½ and 4 hours. There is no white water on this journey so you can float past the jungle clad banks of the deep green river keeping an eye out for turtles, river otters and many iguanas that perch on branches suspended over the water. Often you will see them launch themselves into the water with the approach of the kayaks.

Visit the Mayan ruins of Lubaantun perched high on a ridge above the Columbia River before hiking to the caves of Blue Creek where you can cool off in the refreshing pools.

Try your luck at fly fishing, spin casting and trolling along the coast and outer cayes.

Discover the manatees of Placencia Lagoon, also home to an abundance of wildlife including the jabiru stork, Morelet's crocodile, and bottlenose dolphins.
