Tailor-Made Holiday

Baja California - An Extraordinary Journey

17 days

from £9,250pp (excluding flights)

This extraordinary voyage combines the west coast grey whale calving lagoons and the Sea of Cortez to give one of the most comprehensive whale watching trips available.

  • Close up encounters with grey whales and their calves
  • Spot for sperm, blue and fin whales
  • Hike the islands in the Sea of Cortez
  • Improve photography skills with National Geographic professionals
  • Snorkel with sea lions
  • Travel with some of the worlds most experienced guides

Every year during their migration, the great grey whales pause to give birth and nurse their calves in the lagoons off Baja California's west coast.  Exploration of these lagoons allow for wonderful close encounters with the gentle and curious giants.

Within the Sea of Cortez the desert islands are an extraordinary landscape, home to a variety of birds and plants to explore.  Have the opportunity to hike through cacti forests or up striking desert canyons. The colours and photographic opportunities are fantastic. Photograph plunging pelicans and blue-footed babies or kayak, keeping an eye out for fin, pilot, sperm or even blue whales. This itinerary also visits the lagoons along the Pacific side of Baja California as well as the Sea of Cortez, greatly increasing the opportunity to see whales.

Day 1

Fly London to Los Angeles

Fly Los Angeles to La Paz, Mexico

La Paz is the commercial and political capital of Baja California Sur although, as its name suggests, this is a peaceful Mexican port city with a provincial atmosphere. Hernan Cortes visited in 1535 but the region remained largely unpopulated until the 19th century. Pearl diving was the main industry here until the 1930s. Today, La Paz is the starting point for exploring a wealth of marine life within the sea of Cortez

Day 2

Embark
Today fly form Los Angels to La Paz where you will be met and transferred to San Carlos to embark the National Geographic Seabird.

This unique region is one of the most interesting and diverse geographical areas of the world and is still very much a frontier. 760 miles long and as narrow as 30m in some places, the Baja Peninsula is home to some of the earth's most beautiful deserts, along with semi-tropical and mountainous regions, pine forests, and hundreds of miles of untouched beaches and coastline. The waters off Baja are one of the world's finest marine destinations and during the months of January to April they offer the best opportunity for whale watching.

Day 3

Bahia Magdalena
In kayaks and zodiacs explore the winding canals of Bahia Magdalena’s dense mangrove swamps. Bird watching here can be excellent; Frigate birds, Pelicans, Cormorants, Terns and Great Blue Herons, Ibis, Whimbrels and Willets are among the species we might see. It's not unusual to see up to forty species of birds in just one day along these fertile shorelines where they refuel for their destinations ahead.

Day 4

Laguna San Ignacio
Laguna San Ignacio is a large bay and another favoured haunt of the grey whales in Baja. The ship will linger in this remote and important locale, while you observe the mother and calf pairs, both from the ship and from water level in zodiacs.

For some reason, the whales here seem to be friendlier than they are elsewhere. It’s not unusual for mothers and calves to approach our boats, the calves often playing hide and seek.

Day 7

Sea of Cortez
Cruise past the spectacular Friars Rocks at Land's End. Optional visit to the historic town centre of San Jose del Cabo.

Espiritu Santo, Los Islotes, Rasa and Santa Catalina, are some of the melodious names of these islands scattered throughout this beautiful sea. After over 20 years of exploration here, the ship still discovers new places and experiences exciting events: one hundred bottlenose dolphins leaping over Sperm whales near our ship; a pod of Fin whales feeding around a convergence zone; thousands of Heermann’s gulls and Royal Terns arriving on the shores of Isla Rasa to begin incubating their eggs or the sight of hundreds of Humboldt squid illuminated in the ship’s bow lights.

The best areas for whale watching remain consistent — the waters south of Isla Carmen, Canal de Ballenas up north and near the mouth of Bahia Concepcion. Whether on the bridge of the ship, on zodiacs or kayaks, you will be in prime position to observe them all.

Sue Grimwood, Travel Expert

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
