Australia is a vast country with some truly spectacular scenery, untouched by man for millennia. The Northern Territories and in particular Arnhem Land is one of these areas and this trip offers the chance to access a land and culture that few are privileged to experience.

  • Gain access to areas normally off limits and far from any other tourists
  • Camp out in comfort and share stories around the camp fire
  • Explore the ever changing and far reaching landscapes of Kakadu, from gorges to waterfalls and white sandy beaches.
  • Take a walk in Arnhem Land with a local Aboriginal elder
  • Swim in crystal clear plunge pools
  • See some of the best examples of rock art in the country
  • Spend time at Bamurru Plains, an exclusive safari camp on the edge of the Mary River floodplains

Kakadu

Encompassing around 20,000 square km’s of floodplains, rivers, rugged escarpments, cascading waterfalls, mangroves, lily covered billabongs and prehistoric rock art, Kakadu is also home to over 10,000 crocodiles, 280 different bird species and a host of other flora and fauna. It really is a magical place to visit.

Arnhem Land

In the furthest north-eastern corner of Australia lies the vast and unspoilt wilderness of Arnhem Land. The Yolngu people have occupied and owned this land for at least 60,000 years so as well as stunning and diverse landscapes ranging from lush rainforests, paper bark swamps, ancient caves and a rugged coastline this land is also incredibly rich in Aboriginal culture.

Did you know that Arnhem Land is also where the didgeridoo originated from......

Lord Safaris

Amazing scenery can be enjoyed by anyone but a land and its people truly come to life when they are introduced and interpreted for you by guides with a lifelong passion and respect for the culture and landscapes. This is where Sab Lord and his team make the difference.

Bamurru Plains

A perfect end to any Northern Territories adventure, Bamurru Plains sits in a beautiful location that changes with the seasons – flooded plains teem with Water Buffalo, Magpie Geese and Crocodile following the wet season, from April to July. Safari tent style accommodation ensures you are close to nature and making the most of the stunning surroundings. Whilst there you will be fed like a king and have the chance to do as much or a little as you wish. Laze around the pool overlooking the floodplains or board an air boat to explore them instead – all with amazing service on hand.

How can we make your holiday even more special

  • Take a helicopter flight for an aerial view of this sprawling wilderness
  • Fish for Barramundi, Australia’s most prized sports fish
  •  Enjoy a romantic picnic overlooking the floodplains with a picnic hamper, a selection of premium wines, a bird book, set of binoculars and a two way radio to stay in touch

Drive from Darwin to Arnhem Land (Road Journey)

Sab Lord Safari- Day 1
Today, you start an incredible adventure into the Northern Territory outback with quite possibly the best character in the land, Sab lord. He will be your guide while you explore and to make it perfect you will be spending time at Davidsons Camp Arnhem Land, the only place to stay in this incredible protected land.

Sab will collect you from your hotel taking you to explore both Kakadu and Arnhem Land. All of Sabs tours are specifically tailored to your likes/interests/weather but to give you some idea of what you will be doing please see a rough plan below.

Head south on the Stuart Highway then turn left on to the Arnhem Highway which leads west to World Heritage Listed Kakadu National Park. The first stop en-route is Fogg Dam Reserve, the dam has year round water coverage which assures its position as an important feeding and roosting site for a wide variety of water birds and other animals.

Travel on to the Adelaide River where to witness the fabulous jumping crocodiles and other wildlife. These Saltwater Crocodiles are a magnificent sight - the crocs are surprisingly powerful and can project their bodies almost totally out of the water using their tail - you will gain a good understanding of why they have survived for more then two hundred million years!

A short detour off the highway is the beautiful Learning Tree Lagoon; this Billabong is often covered in water lilies making it a popular quick stop for photographers. Lunch is at the Bark Hut Inn; this Aussie Roadhouse was built during the buffalo era and is a reminder of earlier, wilder times.

The last stop for today is at Cooinda - experience one of Kakadu's icons - a Yellow Water Cruise. This 10sq. km pristine environment supports a truly wonderful variety of plants, birds, crocodiles and Top End wildlife and you might see saltwater crocodiles, a Jacana bird walking on water, the magnificent sea eagle or any one of the 280 species that visit this billabong. Enjoy this wealth of wildlife, this tranquil habitat and one of the Top Ends great sunsets.

Day 4

Sab Lord Safari Day 2
Today you will visit Arnhem Land; access to this region is restricted to a select group of guides - they know the people and the country intimately. Your journey today will be hosted by one such guide and in some part, by a local Aboriginal.

Arnhem Land is perhaps the one area in Australia where indigenous culture is still dominant, despite a long history of interacting with other cultures. Your Aboriginal guide will show you excellent examples of rock art on Injalak Hill (Long Tom Dreaming), this area has some of the best rock art examples in Western Arnhem Land and some say Australia. The view from the top of the hill is simply breathtaking, looking out across the floodplains and around the escarpment.

Back at the Injalak Art & Craft Centre there is an opportunity to browse or purchase goods from this non-profit Aboriginal organisation and to watch the locals painting and weaving pandanus baskets. In the afternoon explore a remote valley - stunning scenery, billabongs, birds and a place to imagine the life of the Aboriginal people who have been at home here for 50,000 years or more

Day 5

Sab Lord Safari Day 3
Davidson's Arnhemland Safaris at Mt Borradaile is a registered aboriginal sacred site in a remote 700 square kilometres, exclusively leased area nestled against the Arnhemland escarpment. This is a landscape of rugged ranges fringed by idyllic billabongs, flood plains, paper bark swamps and monsoonal rainforests, an amazingly beautiful wilderness. Valleys, overhangs and caves have been occupied for over 50,000 years and offer magnificent galleries of rock art as well as occupation and burial sites. Transfer from Davidsons Arnhem Land Camp to Bamarru Plains.

Day 6

Sab Lord Safari Day 4
Spend the morning visiting Maguk (Barramundi Gorge). A one kilometre walk through sub-monsoon rainforest leads to the base of a beautiful plunge pool. Maguk is a scenic and tranquil place to enjoy a refreshing swim in the series of small waterholes. The water is crystal clear.

Continue on to Bamurru Plains which is located on Swim Creek Station, as you drive through the property your guide will explain the history of the buffalo properties in the Top End as well as the remarkable wetlands eco-system that dominates the coastal belt. Arriving into camp the Bamurru team will offer a refreshing drink before showing you to your safari bungalow.

Day 7

Activites at Bamurru Plains
A typical day at Bamurru may begin with an early morning coffee and muffin in the Main Lodge while the sun rises and the wildlife enjoys the early morning cool. Climb aboard the airboats for an excursion across the flood plains, spotting crocodiles and startling the Magpie Geese into flight. Stopping in a quiet lagoon, shaded by paperbark trees and surrounded by lilies enjoy morning tea before returning to camp as the sun heats the day.

Now there is time for a siesta, a swim, to read a book or quiz your guide for more information on this remarkable place. Lunch is followed by an afternoon activity, perhaps a guided walk or a gentle cruise down the Sampan River, spotting crocodiles sunning themselves on the mud flats. Return to the camp in the evening and share dinner with your fellow travellers, guides and hosts.
