Akademik Ioffe

The Akademik Ioffe was designed as a scientific research vessel, built in Finland in 1989 for the Russian Academy of Science. Manoeuvrable, fast, stable and with little ambient engine noise she makes for an excellent expedition vessel.

The Akademik Ioffe is a comfortable 100 passenger ship with a range of cabins, from those with shared facilities through to spacious suites. Social areas include a dedicated lecture room, lounge, bar and library. The bridge is open to passengers and a great place to watch for wildlife as are the multi-level outside deck areas. A mud room is available to store wellingtons and water-proofs, which are included on loan to all passengers. A fleet of 10 zodiacs are used for off ship excursions.

Designed with researchers in mind all cabins have a large desk along with ample storage. With a range of cabins all but the triples have a tea/coffee maker, hairdryer and a toiletry kit.

Triple cabins: With two lower berths and one upper bed plus shared facilities, these cabins have two opening portholes, a sink in the cabin and are located on deck three.

Twin semi-private cabins: Located on deck four they have two lower beds and semi-private facilities (1 bathroom shared between two cabins). They also have an opening window.

Twin private cabins: Located on decks four and five, these have an opening window and two lower berths with an en suite bathroom.

Superior cabins: Located on deck three these cabins have opening portholes, two lower berths and a seat, along with upgraded linen.

Shackleton suites: Located on Decks four and five all of these cabins have a separate living room with sofa that can be converted into a bed, a large desk and opening windows. The sleeping quarters has a double bed with upgraded linen. Extras include an arrival gift basket with healthy snacks and a bottle of wine, binoculars and wildlife reference book.

The Master Suite: Located on deck five and offers all the facilities of the Shackleton Suites with slightly larger rooms. The bathroom contains a bath and the windows overlook the bow, this is the best suite on the vessel.

Why we like IT

What the Akademik Ioffe lacks in glamour she makes up for with impressive expeditionary credentials. A huge bridge and ample deck space along with exceptional stability and speed makes for an ideal platform for polar exploration.
