Tailor-Made Holiday

Fly to Antarctica and Cruise the Peninsula

Fly to Antarctica before cruising around the Antarctic Peninsula

10 days

from £8,895pp (excluding flights)

This is a unique concept flying to Antarctica before joining a ship to explore the peninsula. Fly from Chile to Antarctica in under two hours rather than the conventional two day approach by ship across the idiosyncratic waters of the Drake Passage.

  • A unique 10 day door-to-door trip - the shortest Antarctica trip available
  • Reach Antarctica in under two hours by plane, instead of two days by ship.
  • Visits the highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula.
  • In Antarctica, travel aboard a small (max 122) ice-strengthened vessel, with excellent guides.

Departing from Punta Arenas on the toe of Chile by specially designed plane, fly to King George Island in the South Shetland Islands. Join your small expeditionary boat and begin cruising the stunning Antarctic peninsula. Some of the highlights including Deception Island, Lemaire Channel, Paradise Bay, Cuverville Island, Port Lockroy, Perterman island and Half Moon bay.

This trip will appeal particularly to those short on time, or without good sea legs.

Day 1

Fly London to Madrid

Fly Madrid to Santiago overnight

Day 2

Fly Santiago to Punta Arenas

Situated at the foot of The Andes with striking views across the Straits of Magellan to Tierra Del Fuego, Punta Arenas is Patagonia's liveliest and most interesting city. Made rich by the wool boom following the importation of sheep from The Falklands in the 19th century, vestiges of the town's heyday remain today in the form of fine colonial architecture and interesting history. The town itself is compact with everything within walkable distance. A visit to the extraordinary Palacio Sara Braun and the manicured cemetery are strongly recommended.

Punta Arenas
In the evening you will join the rest of the passengers who you will be joining on the Antarctica XXI Fly/ Cruise to Antarctica tomorrow for a pre-cruise dinner in the Hotel Jose Nogueira.

You will be staying at Hotel Cabo de Hornos, Bed & Breakfast

Day 3

Fly to South Shetlands to Board the Boat
Transfer to Punta Arenas airport for the approx 2 hour flight down to King George Island on the South Shetlands, Antarctic.
Met at the Chilean airbase, from where it is a 15 minute walk to the harbour, here the zodiacs leave to join your expedition ship to explore Antarctica.

You will be staying at Ocean Nova, Full board

Day 4

Aitcho & Deception Island
Morning visit to Aitcho Island and its Gentoo and Antarctic Penguin colonies and then onto Deception Island in the afternoon. This beautiful island was formed by volcanic activity that resulted in a sea-flooded crater, still active today. Your ship will carefully navigate through the narrow gateway, called Neptune's Bellow. Visit to the ruins of the Norwegian Whaling Station and BAS (British Antarctica Survey) shelter, evacuated in 1967 after a volcanic eruption. Guided tour to Neptune's Bellows, a nesting site of the Cape Petrel. If the weather is suitable there will be a dip in hot volcanic waters at Pendulum Cove's hot geothermal springs.

You will be staying at Ocean Nova, Full board

Day 5

Port Lockroy
Morning visit to Port Lockroy on Wiencke Island. Located among beautiful narrow channels and steep snow-capped mountains, Port Lockroy provides a sheltered port that was first used by whalers nearly 100 years ago, where you can still see the decayed remains of whale skeletons. During World War II the British set up a base here to establish a firm presence in Antarctic. Research activities such as surveying, geology, and meteorology continued at the base until 1962, when it was abandoned. Whales and other animals are frequently seen around the island, including Gentoo Penguins, King Cormorants, Minke and Humpback Whales.

In the afternoon you visit beautiful Paradise Bay, a perfect spot to explore with our Zodiacs, if the weather allows it. The stillness of the water creates a perfect mirror-like reflection of the surrounding mountains and blue glaciers, an image only broken by the floating icebergs and the Zodiacs.

You will be staying at Ocean Nova, Full board

Day 6

Lemaire Channel
Early cruise through the Lemaire Channel. As the ship approaches the Lemaire Channel the steep cliffs become so narrow that you will not believe there is a passage through which the ship can sail. Once we enter the channel, weather permitting, you will view one of the most scenic areas in Antarctic, nicknamed the ' Kodak Gap'. Look out for humpback whales that frequent this area. Landing and sighting of Petermann Island, the southernmost spot in the trip, a snow covered and domed island that rises moderately steeply to a rocky summit, more than 650 ft. above sea level. Adelie and Gentoo penguins, Blue-eyed Shags and South Polar Skuas are confirmed breeders in this area. In the afternoon you explore Cuverville island, a small rocky island, a great nesting place of the Gentoo Penguin.

You will be staying at Ocean Nova, Full board

Day 7

Half Moon Island
Morning landing at Half Moon Island, a small island in between Greenwich and Livingstone Islands which often boasts a large Antarctic Penguin colony.

Visit to the Arctowski Polish Academy of Science Antarctic Base where you will be warmly welcomed by the scientific personnel.

You will be staying at Ocean Nova, Full board

Day 8

Disembarkation at Frei and Fly Back to Punta Arenas
Return to the Eduardo Frei Chilean Air Force Antarctica Base on King George Island for the flight back to Punta Arenas. Depending upon the weather it is anticipated that you are likely to get back to Punta Arenas sometime in the afternoon.

You will be staying at Hotel Cabo de Hornos, Bed & Breakfast

Day 9

Fly Punta Arenas to Santiago

Fly Santiago to Madrid overnight

Day 10

Sue Grimwood, Travel Expert

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
