Wa Ale is located on a 9,000-acre island, one of 800 islands within the Lampi Marine National Park in southern Myanmar. This privately owned eco-tourism project occupies a remote and little-visited island and has been built with a strong ethos of conservation in mind.
Set on a sandy cove, backed by lush rainforest and surrounded by mangroves and rocky coastline the resort was constructed by hand, using reclaimed and biodegradable materials.
The 11 tented beach villas and three treetop villas all have either a decked area or balcony with views of the rainforest or ocean. Additional facilities include a choice of restaurants and a spa.
Guests who travel to Wa Ale are not just staying in a magical place amidst a remote and beautiful landscape, they are also supporting conservation efforts and giving back to the surrounding environment and local communities.
The resort pledges to annually donate 20% of net profits and 2% of room revenues to the Lampi Foundation which was created to help fund social welfare and conservation projects in the area.
Wa Ale Island’s Turtle Beach (where most of the resort is located) is a protected nesting area where sea turtles lay their eggs year-round. The resort has developed a conservation program and hatchery on the island and since its initial conception, the resort has saved over 4,000 sea turtles by guarding nests against poaching.
With such a beautiful location there is a range of activities on offer to explore the underwater world, rainforests, mangroves and local culture. Snorkelling and diving are excellent with 10 dive sites available in the area including reef and cave diving. The mangroves and rivers surrounding the property can be explored by kayak or paddleboard and there is a selection of jungle trails to explore on foot.
It is also possible to learn more about the local communities and their culture with visits to local villages and schools plus the chance to learn about the resorts conservation efforts.
Wildlife on the island is diverse and rich with marine life including whale sharks, manta ray, turtle and dolphin and on land there are gibbon, monitor lizard and even the near-extinct pangolin. Birdlife ranges from sea eagles to kingfisher and hornbill.
Wa Ale Island Resort is located in southern Myanmar within the Myeik Archipelago and close to the border with Thailand. The resort is reached via a two hour private boat transfer from Kawthaung. On board the luxury speedboat guests are provided with snacks, drinks and cool towels. Should guests arrive early into Kawthaung they will be transferred to the Wa Ale welcome centre where they can access WiFi and enjoy a drink and light snack until transfer time.
The port of Kawthaung which is located at the southern tip of Myanmar can be accessed from Phuket or Bangkok in Thailand or from Yangon.

Wa Ale really was one of the most amazing places we have ever been too. Incredibly beautiful and just excellent all round. A real gem.
Destination: Myanmar
Hotel: Wa Ale
Your expertise helped us with our choices of activity, and we were often pleasantly surprised by some of the things arranged - the boat building at Inle was fascinating, we loved eating in the Burmese houses and thought that a real highlight and adored the ballooning in Bagan.
