Hidden within a quiet valley of the exclusive Mara North Conservancy, Saruni Mara is one of the smallest camps in the area, giving it an intimate and personal feel that it stands out for.
A founding member of the conservancy, the camp helps support the local community and is renowned for its expert Maasai guides.
Saruni Mara consists of five cottages and one family villa, as well as a nearby exclusive villa. All of these feature en-suite bathrooms and lovely wooden verandas, which look out over the hills of the conservancy. Thatched roofs and white-washed walls lend a traditional feel to the design, with wooden, rug-covered floors beneath.
Saruni Mara stands out for its brilliant, immersive programme, known as the ‘Warrior Academy’. This is ideal for families or children, with its focus on tracking, tool-making and other bush skills. Taking place over several days, it is a fascinating way to spend time in the company of Maasai warriors, learning about their culture.
Kuru House, with its high thatched roof, beautiful deck and open fireplace, forms the main area of the camp. Meals take place here – when they are not served in the bush – and the three-course dinner menu is Italian inspired, thanks to the Italian background of the camp’s owners. There is also a library – a rarity in the bush.
Solar power provides the camp with hot water and electricity. Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and main area.
Saruni Mara is located within the Mara North Conservancy, which borders the northern edge of the national reserve. This is an unfenced border, meaning wildlife moves freely between the two areas. The conservancy is home to a number of other camps, but it is not accessible to those staying in the reserve or in neighbouring conservancies, guaranteeing a level of exclusivity and far fewer crowds than the national reserve.
