Refugio Amazonas

Nestled within 500 acres of private reserve that borders the Tambopata National Reserve, Refugio Amazonas is a jungle lodge that offers guests the opportunity to experience the wildlife-dense jungle at close quarters.

With monkeys, caimans, capybaras, parrots and harpy eagles being amongst the hundreds-strong species to inhabit the region, visitors to this wilderness oasis had best be nature lovers.

Offering 32 rooms, spread between four wings and connected by raised boardwalks, are built from cane and boast an open side that overlooks the rainforest and ensures the feeling of oneness with the environment. Some of the accommodations feature hammocks and indoor living spaces that allow guests to best take advantage of the immersive jungle-views. The central two-storey communal area comes complete with an open buffet restaurant, bar, wellness centre, boutique and lounge, and its overarching structure has been designed to offer high views of the surrounding canopy.

The open-air rooms present an entirely new way of experiencing the diverse ecosystem of the Amazon, even during downtime. There is no need for an alarm clock here since the birds begin their symphonies before dawn.

Sustainability

Refugio Amazonas is the headquarters of the Citizen Science program Wired Amazon, which invites guests to be truly involved in conservation and proactive research programmes, from learning about animal behaviours to being in with the chance to discover a new species (on average, a guest discovers a new species once a month!)

The lodge also works with the surrounding communities of Brazil nut extractors, further extending the benefits of ecotourism to those indigenous people who are committed to sustainable uses of the forest.

Activities

A broad offering of adventure-focused and science-oriented excursions are led by expert naturalist guides and include jungle treks, visits to the canopy tower, journeys to see hundreds of colourful feeding macaws at a clay lick, ascents to the top of a 30-metre canopy tower and involvement with some of the many ongoing scientific research programmes.
