Tucked away in a secluded sandy cove, Masoala Forest Lodge is an intimate tented retreat set against the breathtaking backdrop of Parc National Masoala-Madagascar’s last great expanse of untouched tropical forest.

A seven night stay here starts from £5,295 per person based on two people sharing a twin or double room, including:

The communal spaces – open-sided and lantern-lit by night – invite you to swing lazily in a hammock, cocktail in hand, as local fishermen glide past in their dugout canoes. It’s a place where the forest hums with life, the sea stretches endlessly before you, and time slows down.

Why We Like Masoala Forest Lodge

Getting here is an adventure in itself. A scenic flight followed by a boat journey across the Bay of Antongil, where humpback whales come to nurse their young, makes the journey as exciting as the destination. And when you finally set foot on shore, you’re welcomed by elusive aye-ayes, dazzling chameleons, and spectacular views over Pirate’s Cove.

From kayaking alongside whales, snorkelling over pristine coral, to exploring rainforests rich in lemurs and chameleons, Masoala offers a wild expedition.

Whale Watching

Between June and September, humpback whales migrate through the area, calving in Antongil Bay. Further south, the island of Ile Sainte Marie hosts an annual whale festival, where the local people celebrate the creatures they consider sacred.

To reach the lodge, board a charter flight from Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo to the small town of Maroantsetra where a boat transfer takes you across Antongil Bay directly to the lodge on the shores of the Masoala Peninsula.
