Located in the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains, Marataba Safari Lodge offers a quiet elegance within a vast, privately-managed corner of malaria-free Marakele National Park. It’s an easy drive from Johannesburg, yet feels worlds away.
The lodge blends pale woods, burnt-red stone and curated African art, creating a sense of relaxed refinement. Each of the 15 tented suites is privately located on its own raised platform, built from timber, canvas and stone, with a deck that looks out across the river to the mountains beyond. Bohemian-style bathrooms feature oversized stone bathtubs, and a dedicated family tent offers extra space. Open-plan communal areas, a small pool and a peaceful spa round out the experience.
Marataba strikes that rare balance – wildly beautiful, yet wonderfully accessible. It’s stylish but unshowy – the guiding is excellent, the landscapes dramatic, and the freedom to explore – by vehicle, foot or boat – makes every day feel different. The treehouse experience is also amazing – a night in the wild, entirely your own (or en famille). Just you, the stars, and a thermos of coffee at dawn.
Morning and evening game drives and guided bush walks offer excellent wildlife encounters, while sunrise or sunset cruises on the Miss Mara provide a peaceful way to spot hippo, elephant and birdlife from the river. Families are warmly welcomed, with a kids safari club, tailored activities and engaging, knowledgeable guides.
For something unforgettable, spend a night in the off-grid Thabametsi Treehouse. Set over two solar-powered levels and miles from the lodge, it’s a private wilderness experience. Arrive at dusk for a picnic as the sun sets, and wake to birdsong and coffee at dawn. Suitable for children aged six and over.
Marataba is at the heart of a pioneering public-private partnership that supports ecosystem restoration and long-term wildlife management within the park. The team here monitors keystone species – including predators – and uses data-driven strategies to ensure the health and resilience of the landscape.
Marataba Safari Lodge is within a 52,000 acre privately-managed section of the Marakele National Park and is between 3-3.5 hours from Lanseria or Johannesburg International Airport.
