Manu Learning Centre

A bustling hub of education and research, Manu Learning Centre is a research station turned eco-lodge that is encompassed by regenerating rainforest. On the riverbanks of the Alto Madre de Dios River, the authentic Amazonian lodge benefits from an indescribable location that is home to more than 512 species of birds and 13 species of primates and large mammals that includes jaguars and pumas.

Originally built for researchers working in the Manu Biosphere Reserve, the lodge offers 18 simple rooms in three accommodation pods that share a bathroom and a central dining area that doubles up as a place to eat and to discuss findings with the resident researchers.

Sustainability

Indebted to the protection of the surrounding regenerating rainforest Manu Learning Centre is home to scientists, conservationists and a small group of volunteers from all around the world who are operating at the frontline of conservation.

In choosing to stay here as an eco-tourist, guests are educated by conservation experts as to what it takes to overcome the social, economic and political issues that affect these most biodiverse places on Earth. A stay here also directly supports the indigenous people of the area by providing sustainable livelihoods and improved living standards.

Operating with respect to the indigenous Machiguenga people that inhabit this region, Manu Learning Centre blends into the rainforest whilst offering rustic comforts to the guests who support the research projects.

Activities

As captivating macaws squawk overhead, rascally monkeys dart through the canopy, and hummingbirds congregate around the trees, guests at Manu Learning Centre are able to experience indescribable wildlife encounters without even leaving the confines.

However, what is most unique about a stay here is the opportunity to really become involved with the practical collection of scientific data, including attending night walks to record nocturnal birds, identifying butterflies, checking dung beetle traps and bathing in natural hot springs.
