Why we like the Maharajah's Express

There is an air of nostalgia around travelling on the rails in India. It is an experience like no other akin to the lives of the bygone Maharaja. Yes, the old rail network can rattle and vibrate, however, your valet will not be far behind you to ensure your G&T doesn’t spill. The excursions are first-rate, and at each stop, there is a ceremonious royal welcome.

Facilities

Life onboard is all about refinement, opulence and elegance. All guest salons are been named after a precious stone or the Navratnas.

All the cabins are comfortable and fully equipped with a wardrobe, and under-bed luggage storage, full washroom facilities as standard in each cabin, with the suites having a minibar, spacious sitting area and a tub in the bathroom. You can request a twin- or double-bedded arrangement. Expect gourmet dining on board, with pre or post-dinner drinks, a focal point of the evening in the Rajah Club. The Maharajas club is in the observation car, which offers a library and bar.

The Journey

There are four Maharajas Express Journey departs from either Mumbai or Delhi. We recommend an overnight in both cities. The Treasures of India is a three-night journey covering the typical Golden Triangle with tigers – Agra, Ranthambhore, Jaipur and Delhi. This journey offers a fabulous introduction to luxury train travel. The three six-night journeys offer a variation of destinations through Rajasthan.

The longest journey is seven nights and explores the Southern Indian states of Kerala and Karnataka, Goa and Mumbai. This route takes in the UNESCO heritage site of Hampi, Mysore and Mahabalipuram. Maharaja express will begin or terminate in the southern city of Trivandrum – ideal for an extended beach stay.

Sightseeing

There are complimentary excursions in each destination. If booking a Suite, you have the use of your own private car and driver for sightseeing. Excellent guides are waiting to meet you in each location, and show you highlights of the cities, including special access arrangements and private viewings.
