Tucked away in southern Mozambique on the very edge of Machangulo Peninsula is Machangulo Beach Lodge. With a lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other, the lodge overlooks the channel that runs between Inhaca Island and the Bay of Maputo.
Only accessible by boat, this lodge feels far more remote than it is. It consists of just nine ocean-view rooms that sit on a ridge facing the ocean. Wooden walkways connect theses rooms with both the relaxed main areas and the unspoilt beach. This secluded location is surrounded by five protected areas, both on land and in the sea.
Just a boat ride away from Maputo, and easily accessible from Kruger National Park, Machangulo Beach Lodge is the ideal place for some time on the beach after a South African safari.
All nine rooms are thatched and tented, sitting on raised decks. Each of them as a solid-wall en-suite bathroom, as well as an outdoor shower. Inside, mosquito nets drape over double beds that face the private verandas. The rooms all have air conditioning for use in the hotter summer months.
The main lodge includes a large lounge, bar and dining area. Unsurprisingly, the seafood is excellent. Hidden behind the main building is the boma, and situated near the ocean is a beach bar with a pool and deck.
Spend time taking advantage of Machangulo’s beautiful desert-island location, exploring the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the secluded beaches of this quiet peninsula. Snorkel in front of the lodge (tide permitting), kayak along the idyllic coastline, sit down for a beach picnic, or walk over the unspoilt dunes. Stand-up paddle boarding, shore fishing and shore snorkelling are included in your stay.
The lodge’s friendly activity centre is home to an array of equipment that is free for guests to use. This includes beach towels, gazebos, hammocks, boogie boards, fishing rods and snorkel sets. Activities that are bookable at an additional cost and payable locally include snorkelling excursions, deep sea fishing, diving, guided cultural excursion to Santa Maria and Inhaca islands and dhow cruises.
Access is via a one-hour boat transfer from the marina in Maputo and departure time is determined by the tide.
