Named after its owner, Lale, a proud local Kara, Lale’s Camp sits on the edge of a sweeping ox-bow bend of the River Omo. The camp comprises of four large tents each with a veranda and en-suite facilities including a flush toilet, sink and bucket shower.
Large fig trees provide welcome shade around the camp and the mess area sits under a cool spacious tree canopy offering exceptional views of the river. The camp is only available on an exclusive basis.
Arriving at the camp by boat is an impressive start to your stay at Lale’s and sets the foundations for a camp that puts authentic experience above anything else. The setting is superb, overlooking the Omo river with a multitude of birds frequenting the fig trees that provide the camp’s shelter. Lale’s camp has a refreshing lack of pretence choosing instead to concentrate on delivering what really matters – warm hospitality, good food and memorable, authentic encounters with local communities.
Don’t choose to stay at Lale’s Camp for its gym, wine cellar or spa; it doesn’t have them. Lale’s is more about its remote location, its community-friendly credentials and the experiences it provides for travellers wanting meaningful encounters with Ethiopia’s rural tribespeople.
For anybody wanting authentic and sensitively handled encounters with the Omo’s diverse tribespeople, Lale’s Camp is the place to stay. The village of Duss is where the Kara community are based and so there is an opportunity to spend time with these people as they prepare for an afternoon and evening of dance and ceremony.
Take a boat safari to visit other tribal communities, such as the Mursi, Dassenach, Nyangatom and Suri. The banks of the Omo River are dotted with traditional villages as well as providing a home to crocodiles and a myriad birdlife.
Located near the village of Duss, Lale’s Camp is situated in the heart of the Omo river basin and is the perfect base for exploring the diverse tribal culture of the Omo valley.
