Giraffe Manor

Giraffe Manor is a beautiful, eccentric country house located in an upmarket suburb of Nairobi, a hop and skip from major attractions. Originally built in 1932, and saved from dereliction in 1974 by US conservationist Betty Leslie-Melville and her husband Jock.

Giraffe Manor has two main buildings – the original Manor House with six bedrooms, and Garden Manor, a four-bedroom annexe, all beautifully decorated. There aren’t many places you stay where a giraffe is likely to pop its head through the window and steal a bit of your breakfast.

Why We Like Giraffe Manor

The colonial style of the lodge gives it charm, but it is the giraffes that give this place its character and personality. Despite now being known around the world, Giraffe Manor has lost none of its quirkiness and individuality. The novelty of having giraffes poke their heads through the windows as you’re eating breakfast is unlike anything else in Africa.

This plantation-style property has 45 spacious suites, all overlooking the garden, towards the distant Ngong Hills. The design is classically stylish but set up in such a way as to give the hotel a much smaller, more intimate atmosphere than the number of rooms might suggest.

The Emakoko sits on Nairobi National Park southern edge – a safari lodge within easy reach of the city. Two rows of stone bungalows are built into a steep hillside, facing into the park and looking out over a winding river. Beside the river, tall trees dot the long grasses, which are occasionally trampled by a wandering hippo.
