Bordering the postcard-ready General Carrera Lake set east of the iconic Carretera Austral highway, El Mirador De Guadal looks out over turquoise waters and distant glaciers. Constructed from local cypres and lenga wood, the restaurant serves Chilean dishes made using organic herbs and vegetables harvested from its own gardens.
Its eight wooden chalets are comfortable and private, each boasting spectacular lake and mountain views from their romantic terrace seating areas. Spacious and widely spaced from one another, the chalets take advantage of the already isolated location of the site and feature living areas and firewood to make for a cosy stay.
Being owner-run, the property operates in a friendly and efficient manner, with a real focus on creating a home-from-home atmosphere. Friendly without being intrusive, the owners offer a genuinely warm welcome that makes the long drive on dirt roads well worth the effort.
Aside from the nearby fossil hikes and glaciers, the property is close to the world-renowned Marble Caves which are a one of South America’s must-see geological formations. From the lodge, it is also possible to head out on foot to trek alongside River Maqui or through ancient lenga forests in search of petrified sea shells.
Alternatively, saddle up to explore Patagonia on horseback during a trip to an impressive 25-metre waterfall or unwind with some lakeside yoga. Those seeking longer days of adventure can walk on the Exploradores Glacier or travel to the San Rafael Lagoon.
El Mirador De Guadal is set close to the General Carrera Lake in the Aysen region of Chilean Patagonia, close to the world-renowned highway the Carretera Austral.

Paul created an itinerary that perfectly suited our interests, and we were particularly impressed with the properties that he selected for us. Thank you for recommending we visit the Atacama Desert, which we hadn’t even thought of visiting, but which turned out to be the highlight.
