A historic whitewashed property that is bursting with character and charm, El Albergue Lodge is set next to the train station in Ollantaytambo and one hour away from the spectacular Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.
Surrounded by hummingbird-dense gardens and engulfed by the scents of passionflowers and peach trees, El Albergue boasts a restaurant that utilises home-grown organic ingredients and fresh produce from the Sacred Valley as well as a traditional Pachamama farm lunch cooked in a hot stove earth oven.
Its 17 rooms are simple and rustic in style, each overlooking magnificent garden and mountain landscapes, and some of the rooms boast private balconies, hammocks and kitchens. Special features of the property include a wood-stove eucalyptus steam sauna, access to the organic coffee roasting facilities, a distillery, and complimentary bicycles for Andean explorations.
Guests are offered complimentary use of mountain bikes, helmets, gloves, reflectors and baskets, as well as a handy detailed map of Ollantaytambo that outlines the most magnificent bike trails.
Ever conscious of the agricultural importance of Ollantaytambo, which dates back to pre-Inca times, El Albergue Lodge launched its own small farming project in 2010.
Nestled within the terracing fed by 500-year-old water canals, the farm produces a variety of vegetables, corn, quinoa and potatoes in a largely traditional style that rejects the use of agrochemicals or synthetic fertilisers. Guests at the property can even be involved in ploughing with oxen and rotating crops.
The Inca town of Ollantaytambo, with its narrow cobblestone streets and huge archaeological ruins, is right on the doorstep of El Albergue Lodge. From here, you can also take the train to the Lost City of Machu Picchu. For the more adventurous, extraordinary river rafting and horseback riding are available in this region.
Stop by the organic farm located next to the hotel for an authentic Pachamama meal, visit the coffee facility to meet the roasting master and learn about the beans’ origins or frequent the Andean distillery, both of which offer tastings.
El Albergue Lodge is situated in Ollantaytambo, a small Inca town in Peru’s Sacred Valley, approximately two hours away from Cusco by road. Due to its position right next to the train station, guests can easily access the Machu Picchu train.
