Featured as one of TIME magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Places 2024’, Burhan Wilderness Camp is a minimalistic yet luxurious glamping retreat situated in a private micro-conservancy within the Khata Wildlife Corridor, nestled between two pristine channels of the Karnali River.

Burhan camp has a maximum of twelve safari-style tents and no fences. It is minimalism with comfort. Burhan is about embracing the outdoors – having dinner under starlit skies, an outdoor campfire, open-air toilets and showers.
Burhan hosts some prime wildlife species including Greater One-Horned Rhinos, Bengal Tigers, Asian wild Elephants, and many birds such as Black Ibis, Ruddy Shelduck, Nightjars, Fishing Owls. Wilderness lovers can make the most of their time while helping to safeguard this vital landscape for both wildlife and local communities — and that is the guiding principle.

Safari has become too passive and is increasingly about the size and amenities of your tent or lodge. This is not Burhan. Burhan is all about the experience – it is immersive, it is about fieldcraft, it is about understanding the world of the tiger.   • Drive into Bardia National Park for the day – unlike most Indian national parks, you can stay all day in the park.
  • Wildlife river rafting through jungles and pristine valleys.
  • Visit the local community projects that Burhan is involved with and learn about the human-wildlife conflict that villagers face on a daily basis.

Sustainability

Burhan’s ‘leave no trace’ approach ensures minimal wildlife disturbance.
Burhan is all for the community, believing in market-based tools for community empowerment and all of the ground team being locals from the surrounding villages.
In terms of its footprint, Burhan has no concrete structures and no fences to protect the last remaining sliver of the wildlife corridor. Its food is organic and sourced locally from the nearby villages.100% of the wastewater is recycled through vetiver plantation.

Location

Burhan Wilderness Camp sits on the edge of Bardia National Park in western Nepal. The easiest route is a short flight from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Nepalgunj, followed by a two-hour drive. Alternatively, it can be reached by road from several cities. From Thakurdwara, a 20-minute transfer brings you into camp.
