Perched on the flabbergasting Patagonian coastline within 100,000 spectacularly biodiverse acres, Bahia Bustamante Lodge is a unique seaside lodge that has earned the feat of Argentina’s little-known answer to the Galapagos Islands.
Speak to our experts about how to combine a few days on the Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO recognised nature reserve, with Bahia Bustamante for an off-grid experience surrounded by petrified forests, sandy beaches, moonscapes and crystal-clear water; an area that attracts everything from penguins and armadillos to sea lions and guanacos.
Its 16 cabins either face towards the steppe or the ocean, the latter being the most sought-after option, and each feature living rooms and kitchens and some with terraces, a wood-burning stove, personal mountain bikes and miniature wineries. A restaurant serves a delicious and seasonal prescribed menu and the property, which is currently working towards producing Argentina’s first sea wine, is establishing itself as a foodie destination in its own right.
In October 2018 the lodge planted 2000 vines next to the sea, which will go on to produce Argentina’s first sea wine. This project was launched by Matias Michelini, one of the most innovative and radical winemakers in the country, together with master mixologist Tato Giovannoni. In addition, its biodynamic orchard boasts 300 olive groves and they also keep production of algae which is used in the restaurant’s dishes.
Paddle in the natural swimming pools that have formed amongst the rocks, embark on a 4×4 ride across the steppe or trek through the Petrified Forest. Alternatively, jump aboard a small vessel for a sail along Malaspina Cove to find sea lions or to Penguin Island to see its colonies of Magellans.
Historic introductory tours of the seaweed industry and ranch days that focus on sustainable wool production bring the culture and heritage of Bahia Bustamante to the fore, while mountain bikes are spectacular options for exploring the wilderness independently.
Committed to the future of Patagonia, this region makes up part of the Patagonia Austral National Park and Blue Patagonia UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and it is also an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area.
The estate was described by The New York Times as “Argentina’s Private (and Secret) Answer to the Galapagos” and by The Telegraph as “The Eco-Retreat at the End of the World”. It has also featured in Condé Nast Traveller.
Bahia Bustamante Lodge is situated on the Patagonian coast along the northern shore of the San Jorge Gulf, surrounded by idyllic landscapes and a haven for wildlife.
