Arkaba Homestead sits on a 60,000-acre private conservancy amidst the Flinders Ranges; an ancient landscape moulded by millions of years of geological activity and home to some of Australia’s most spectacular outback scenery and wildlife.
With just five rooms the homestead which dates from the 1850s offers guests a real taste of classic Australian hospitality. The decor of the homestead pays homage to its history, with headboards made from fence posts and bedside tables covered by wool sacks. Each bedroom opens onto a shaded verandah with views of the surrounding ranges.
Arkaba is the perfect place to completely escape and cut yourself off from the modern world, surrounded by beautiful outback scenery and abundant wildlife. Enjoy a cold beer around the campfire as you watch for shooting stars.
With no telephones, televisions, minibars or the typical features of a hotel room to distract, the focus is on the experience. That said, Arkaba provides all the comforts one could wish for.
Daily activities are including in a stay at Arkaba and these range from 4WD open-top safaris (topped off with sundowners as the sunsets), bushwalking and bird and wildlife watching. Also available at an additional cost are scenic flights for the most awesome views of the Flinders Ranges as well as heli-swagging and guided Aboriginal walks.
A walking safari is the most wonderful way to experience the scale and beauty of the outback. Join the Arkaba walk and over four days journey through dry creek beds, rolling hills, remote waterholes and rugged mountains, sleeping under the stars (in comfort) and truly escaping into the wilderness for a few days.
The wildlife in the area is prolific and this is largely thanks to the conversation efforts of Arkaba who have worked hard to transform what was once an outback station into a private wildlife conservancy. As a result of this, expect regular sightings of Australia’s three largest macropods, the Red Kangaroo, Western Grey Kangaroo and the Common Wallaroo, as well as far less common species and some wonderful birdlife.
Located in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, Arkaba Lodge is a five-hour drive from the city of Adelaide or a one-hour charter flight from Adelaide or Kangaroo Island.
