Situated only one hour from Jaipur in the rural landscape of Bishangarh village, Fort Bishangarh has been painstakingly restored to create a destination hotel in the Rajasthani countryside.
The architecture of the fort has strong Mughal and British influences, featuring battlement turrets and arches. The fort offers three beautifully presented restaurants, a spa and a mix of heritage rooms and suites all in keeping with the fort, including beautiful jharokha-style windows.
The fort offers a gastronomic experience. Dine on the rooftop terrace served up with an unforgettable view.
The 230-year-old warrior fort is perhaps the only one of its kind to be converted into a luxury heritage resort. It is a unique example of Jaipur Gharana architecture, influenced by both the Mughals and the British.
The fort offers 57 rooms and suites all with amazing views and large bathtubs. 20 Grand Suites are decorated with neutral tones and are some of our favourite rooms. The 11 Royal Suites have indigenous touches. There are eight Regal Suites with noble splendour and large day beds. All the rooms are based in the fort.
The royal living quarters are now the indoor speciality restaurant Amarsar, following the Silk Route. Nazaara, an outdoor grill dining terrace dishes out Rajput and frontier cuisine which involves sand-pit cooking and smoked meats. Madhuveni is where you find the cigar/cognac turret. This room still retains openings in its thick stone wall for muskets and for pouring out hot, boiling oil on intruding armies below. The Kachhawa Lounge, where the secret royal escape route was found, now serves champagne, coffee, chai and cakes. The kitchen is overseen by a celebratory Indian chef, Ranveer Brar.
Meanwhile, down the hill is the Haveli, offering a labyrinth of spaces to chill, including a pool, bar, fitness centre, luxurious banquet lawns and Play Alila, the Kids’ Club, with separate areas for teenagers and toddlers. There are well maintained organic gardens, a fruit orchard and a greenhouse for farm to table dining.
The local village of Bishangarh is home to artisans happy to show you their skills. Visit the local potter and jewellery maker, both of whom are supported by Alila.
Time Magazine listed Alila Fort Bishangarh as one of the World’s greatest places of 2018 and awards have been received for the restoration project.
Alila Fort Bishangarh is perched high on a hill, with 360 degrees of the Rajasthani countryside, on the northern reaches of Jaipur district, an hour’s drive from Amber Palace. The road between Jaipur and Bishangarh can be a little slow going for the last six kilometres.
