This journey heads east out of Las Vegas along the low desert towards Utah. The small town of Springdale marks the west entrance to the park and is a good stop point for lunch. On arrival to Zion National Park, pass through the national park entrance (payment required) and start driving the winding road that leads through the main valley to the eastern entrance.

On passing through the eastern entrance, travel a further ten minutes to reach Zion Mountain Ranch.

Zion National Park, located in south west Utah, is full of sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons and unique flora and fauna. The park has a unique geography as it lies at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin, and Mojave Desert regions. During your visit to the park you may see mountain lions, mule deer, eagles, condors and many other animals in their natural setting. An outstanding feature of the park is Zion Canyon, 15 miles long and up to half a mile deep, cut through the red and tan-coloured Navajo Sandstone by the North Fork of the Virgin River. Day at leisure, a great option would be to go into Zion National Park and do some hiking. If feeling adventurous hike up the Virgin River and into the Narrows, the largest slot canyon in the world. Hike beside 200 metre high walls that are only 10 metres apart in places. After hiking head into the lovely town of Springdale for some great food and visit some of the art galleries.

Day 4

Drive from Zion Mountain Ranch to Escalante

Drive from Zion Mountain Ranch to Escalante, a two hour drive. Stop enroute at Bryce Canyon National Park.

The Grand Staircase - Escalante National Monument in southern Utah is one of the most scenically diverse areas in the world. An area of colourful sandstone cliffs, narrow slot canyons, plains and plateaus. The monument can be divided into two distinct areas, the Escalante River Canyon which has waterfalls, arches and narrow canyons and the more remote and less visited Grand Staircase which has the most extensive network of slot canyons in Utah.

Bryce National Park Visit
Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon but a giant natural amphitheatre full of Hoodoos - pillars of rock formed by wind, water and ice erosion. "It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
