Mexico Holidays

Many great civilisations have left their mark on Mexico. Be sure to trek through vine-covered pyramids around the Yucatan Peninsula and wander through the colonial heritage town of Oaxaca.

Spanish colonial architecture, bougainvillaea-draped courtyards, cobbled streets, museums and art galleries.

Whales, beautiful Caribbean beaches, deserts, mountains, festivals, music and some fantastic hotels. A holiday to Mexico may not be top of the list of every traveller but it should be.

This huge country spans a range of habitats, from snow-capped mountains and pine-forested highlands to tropical rainforest and dry cactus deserts. Great cultures and empires such as the Olmecs, Maya and Aztecs have left their mark on Mexican traditions, culture and people.

Hacienda stays

The most authentic way to appreciate Yucatan’s rich history is to stay in one of the unique hacienda’s. Built upon the vast profits amassed from the production of sisal, a fibre that became known as “green gold”, the haciendas hark back to an opulent and privileged past. The invention of synthetic fibres and post-revolution land re-distribution left many haciendas to crumble into ruin, but a number have recently been restored and converted into stunning luxury hotels.

Sue Grimwood

I was inspired to travel south from an early age. My form teacher when I was nine made us listen to tapes from Shackleton’s expeditions, I didn’t know it at the time, but it obviously left a deep impression on my psyche.
